Curtis Joseph is, Once Again, a Toronto Maple Leaf

The Toronto Maple Leafs jumped into the free agent market on Tuesday, signing forward Niklas Hagman to a four-year, $12 million contract, defenceman Jeff Finger to a four-year deal worth $3.5 million a season and goaltender Curtis Joseph to a one-year, $700,000 contract.

Hagman, 28, scored a career high 27 goals and 41 points last season with the Dallas Stars and earned $675,000.

In 481 games, the Finnish winger scored 80 goals and 165 points.

Finger, 28, played 72 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season, tallying 19 points and a plus-12 rating. In 94 career NHL games, he has 24 points and a plus-22.

Joseph, 41, spent four seasons with the Maple Leafs from 1998 to 2002 after arriving as a free agent from Edmonton. In between stints with the Leafs, the veteran netminder played with Detroit, Phoenix and Calgary.

"Curtis will provide outstanding support to Vesa Toskala this season," said interim GM Cliff Fletcher in a statement. "He had tremendous success playing in Toronto in years past and we expect him to be a stabilizing influence for our team, both on and off the ice. We are really excited to have him back in our team's colours."

In nine games with the Flames last season, Joseph went 3-2 with a 2.55 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. The veteran goalie has appeared in 922 NHL games for St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit, Phoenix and Calgary.

Hmmmmmm. Good for Back-up but not starting. I think that was the idea anyways as he is 41. Be nice to see him retire in the blue and white.

He didn't come back for the hockey...

Posted by The Ear on Jul-01-2008 23:44:

Fail.

That is all.

Posted by MarkT on Jul-02-2008 00:49:

clearly, he is the backup...at a fair price too. fans will eat it up and it's not a bad move from a hockey standpoint too.

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Jul-02-2008 03:43:

cujo is a good signing.....he will play maybe 15 games all season.

I am really impressed with the Finger signing....very solid young defenceman....he is a younger and stronger Gill.

Joseph is a perfect fit as a back up....the leafs need a cheap back up for a year or so and then bring poggee up.

Finger is a good young defenceman....3.5 mill a year isn't that much for a defenceman....if you want defenceman then you're going to pay the bucks for him. He is being paid at the same level at any other 3rd or 4th defenceman.

Posted by gummybear on Jul-02-2008 16:32:

i think it's a good deal...he's be ok as back up and if it doesn't work..they haven't spent so much that they can't find someone else...plus joseph is a stand up dude..one of my all time favourite leafs...i think it's amazing that he is going to retire a leaf..and probably will stay in the organization for years to come..

but i think they totally overpaid for him. he got a 700% pay raise. that's just ridiculous for a no name defenseman. it should've been 2 mil tops. and i don't like the long contract either. 4 years? give him 2 and see where he stands. however, at least there aren't any NTC or NMC being handed out.

btw, mccabe is out apparently.

lol. (seems to be the phrase of the day)

it is a good price and fans will eat it up, agreed.

Leafs are funny!

What are you smoking??

How do you know he's a good young Defenseman. Have you honestly heard of him before this last week?

He's almost 29 and has only played 94 games in the NHL??

During the playoffs with Colorado, he was a healthy scratch for 1/2 those games...

$3.5million/year for a player who was a healthy scratch?? Fuck that.

The only thing the Leafs are playing for this year is the Tavares Cup! Go LEAFS GO!

scouts are sayin he's a late bloomer..and has huge potential..these are the type of trades that can either bite you in the ass or make you look like a magician..either way..you need a couple of these type of potential "steals" in the rebuilding stages....let's hope the scouting team knows what they're talkin about..

Most D-men don't even hit their prime until they are in their 30s....Defence is a hard position to learn. Colorado has been my team from the west for a long time. He is a solid stay at home defenceman....no he isn't going to score goals and he isn't going to be a power play specialist. He is very much like Gill....just younger and stronger.

Defenceman are all over paid when they become UFAs. You are probably right...he isn't worth 3.5 mill a year but is Redden worth what....6 mill a year? Maybe 4 years ago he was.

You would have to be on crack to think any team is going to try and bomb just so they can get Tavares or any other first pick.....especially with the lottery format.

WTF @ Sundin being offered 20 mil for 2 yrs from Vancouver.

So much for the owners not unnecessarily driving up salaries. Sundin is a great player...but this would make him the highest paid in the league and that's fucking ridiculous.

the NHL is a joke and this type of irresponsible offer (and other contracts being announced) are going to lead to the same problems as before.

teams will cry poor, players union will cry foul...collective bargaining will be a disaster...etc.

I can't wait until the Raptors season starts

Although I agree.....$22 mill a year for a broken down basketball player seems just as stupid as 10 mill for Sundin.

so Hossa to Detroit.....wow.....can anyone say repeat.

who?

And $10M per year for Sundin is absolutely ridiculous. Couldn't even get his team into the playoffs

The top NBA players are all making 15-20 million a year right now or they will be when their current contracts are up)...yet no one in the NHL currently earns even 9 mil a year (unless that recently changed).

So why is it logical to offer 10 mil a year to a guy pushing 40, who's unsure if he's even going to play this year, and who was tied for 20th and 34th in scoring over the last couple of years?

In terms of it making sense from a team standpoint, the Raps also had to rid themselves of as much salary as they took on...but did Vancouver shed 20 mil? I doubt it...

Add to that the financial health of the NBA and the average franchise vs. that of the NHL and the average franchise and the point becomes even more clear.

It's not just Sundin...the contracts going around this year are way out of line.

Once again, the NHL owners and GMs are sabotaging the health of the league because they're incapable of exerting some restraint.

^ and then another lock out...I don't understand why sports can't be more like normal business CAN'T THEY SEE THE CYCLE!?!?!?!
