"mixed in key" software... whats everyone think?

So I'm pretty new at dj'ing and i just got this "mixed in key" program that I'm sure everyone's probably heard of(for those of you who haven't it tells you the key of all the songs in your music library so you can easily find songs to mix that won't key clash). My friend who has been dj'ing a long time says "it eliminates the need for musical creativity" and I can see his point, but for a newbie like me i see it as a big help. Whats everyone's opinion on it?

It's a good help, but it's not 100% accurate.

Helpful for general mixing, but don't let it dominate your selection.

imo if you cant key the songs yourself then the program is limited.

dont listen to all the haters though, harmonic mixing is win. just learn to do it yourself, its quicker, easier and more seductive. once you start down the 'mixed in key' software path, forever will it dominate your destiny. consume you it will, as it did obiwan's apprentice.

Rapid evo is free and better because theres an easily acessable keyboard as well.

Obviously if you just have to put some song next than you do it anyway regardless of what the program says, but its useful for if you have like 5 or so tracks you want to put in and your not sure of what order.

Theres no option that fits my stance on it.

Rapid evolution is better and like the guy a couple of posts up said it has a built in keyboard so you can check the keys by ear. I know I get more songs wrong when I use my ear alone then when I have a reference to help me.

exactly...

It's all about marketing in case of mixedinkey, those guys must be really clever at it...they claim to have developed the first software to do this, while Mixmeister and Rapid Evo were both able to do it years ago...

let's hear your stance then

mine is a combination of the last two- it's a nifty piece of software but dj's should learn to key it by ear, and you'll never see me use it.

They also post here a lot. I got a few of my mixes bumped by one of them

I think mixed in key is practical, but I can't stand the assertions made on their site and by the people who developed it. By and large I disagree with the way they perceive DJing.

Agreed, and not only that, there are far better pieces of software for key/BPM detection (though none has ever come remotely close to 100%).

It's a pile of shit and the people naive enough to pay for it without knowing exactly what is is (as opposed to how they sell it to you) deserve the shit results they get.

And that bellend nennon who works for them is one of the biggest idiots to have ever graced these forums.

You didn't have an option for me to vote for the above, but that's my vote.

I got the Xone version so I'm ok.

Also, pretty much everyone associated with them plays shit music.

Shane 54 will totally pwn you with 800 tracks in 5 minutes.

How? With Mixed in Key, that's how. Try to top that from your mom's basement with your little Gemini DJ Pack.

Shane 54 doesn't have time for peasants like you.

Yeah but Armin totally one-upped him on the ASOT mega mix.

Ah one day maybe I'll be able to mix "Headband Techno 2" with 85 tracks in 80 minutes...

you two make the cutest couple.

Hands down one of the best additions to my set up...since I started using it many have noted a surprising improvement in my mixes..

Been doing HM long before these tools came into being.

I can see it being a useful tool for someone who wants to learn perhaps, but in terms of applying it to DJing, it's definately not for me.

I key all my tracks manually.

I think something that all DJS who do HM should remember is that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

There are better tools but nothing compares to a little deeper music theory knowledge and the ability to key your own tracks.

Also to anyone who is getting into HM, and has discoverd the easymix system I would say learn it as a base, but then go on a voyage of discovery, you can mix much more than just 4ths and 5ths. Look at chords etc. to find other compatible notes and try modulation mixes.

There are a lot of HM haters around at the moment, which is fine, each to their own.

Cheers
Nem
