Review: Beats Ahoy - Canaday Day Boatcruise

surprising nobody has started a review yet! I guess everyone is still in recovery mode

so I thought my body would be in agony after the mental as fuck night at guv/skybar...but I just HAD to regain my battery life for my first boat cruise (other than the one I came on while entering the country )

but WOW!

Sun shining, beers flowing, and the disciples grooving to the funk of two Gods - Luke Fair and Nic Fanciulli.

The 'Fan-Fair' couldn't have been any better...everyone had the same expression on their face before and after - (although I'm sure all of us really wanted it to go on until 5pm as it was publicized...so to the promoters, what happened there? )

anyway..to start off... LUKE FAIR

I thought him at Footy was one of the best parties for me personally this year but this one goes right beside it. They both were special in their own ways...
but Luke Fair's sound + a summer boat cruise = PARADISE!
(can anyone ID that remix of the classic by Everything But The Girl - 'Miss you'?)

moving on to the man who basically got everyone moving the night before - Mr. Fanciulli. My second time seeing him after him and Sharam at guv a few months ago..well technically my third if you count the night before with steve lawler. He NEVER disappoints..be it radio shows, studio mixes or live sets! I loved his set of the time I was able to catch him the night before...but I was possessed by his sound on the boat. The way he picked up from where Luke Fair left with big room sounds and then brought it back to the groovy, delicious prog funk was phenomenal.

This boat was all about that groove and your favourite people in high spirits. And to be honest, everyone was a favourite.

p.s. Not even a single g'ing out case or at least not that I know of.

EDIT: Can't wait for the SOS Boat Cruise on Aug 3rd. Get your tickets NOW everyone!

So, was everybody totally dead on the boat after Guv or what?

Posted by Intangible on Jul-02-2008 20:59:

Im pretty sure while on Skybar and laying on my couch afterwards I thought about selling my ticket about 100 times. I was tired and after hearing the first bit of Fanciullis set at Guv I really didnt care. However I could never really pass up fun in the sun with friends, so had 20 minutes of sleep and was good to go. We ALMOST didnt make it. Hahaha. We pretty much ran through the parking lot to the boat, we didnt hear music thought we missed it... we were the last ones on the boat.

The second I stepped aboard I was in awe. The water the sun. Perfect! Lol @ mikey and I for not realizing there was an upstairs for a short while. We finally made it upstairs found a small space to dance and all had a BLAST. Luke Fair was wicked I am officially a fan. Fanciullis set was AMAZING!!!!!!! I loved the energy, very very different from what I heard at guv.

I loved the funky boat. <3 (even though i like the river gambler better)

Props to all the soldiers who pulled off the marathon weekend.
And I will now be forever addicted to boat cruises.

Agreed! This boat was not designed for partying and dancing the way the gsmbler is PLUS the limited open area made the top deck impossible to dance (or move) on

Fucking phenomenal!

fanciulli was laying down some proper destruction at the end. I didn't want the boat to dock damnit!

what remix of Big Fun is that? lawler played it as his last song as well.

Posted by flavor on Jul-02-2008 21:15:

btw what time did we get back at? i never even noticed....

i ended up thinking the same on skybar, except ended up actually selling it (thanks again knox).. really pissed i missed out but was just waaay too tired guess i can't choose when i'm going to marathon it haha

didn't go for the River Gambler boat cruise...and agreed, the top deck was packed. The dj 'booth' being in a corner pushed away at the back kinda sucked.

I didn't stay till the end for Lawler but I'm pretty sure that the one Fanciulli dropped was the Simian Mobile Disco Remix

So this is the first event I can remember since somewhere back in 2005 that I went into feeling like a bag of ass and exited feeling awesome. It was just that good.

Lee (it was Lee up there first, right?) actually played a great warm-up set, WAY better than the nonsense at Skybar. Kind of slow progressive but more on the quirky and mysterious side than the elevator music they normally open with in clubs. Luke Fair played even funkier tunes than his Footwork set (a little more downtempo IIRC, more like his Kiss100), it was absolutely perfect afternoon boat music and there was even room to dance. Nic got a little on the chuggy side for an hour or so but returned to some more bangin' classic house tunes afterwards.

And Star Guitar <3

Musically this was a stellar event. Add some perfect weather and good friends and - so far at least - this was the event of the summer for me (we'll see if I'm still saying that after SOS).

And no G-outs, as far as I could tell! A little bit of sketch in the form of pushy off-balance shirtless dudes near the end, but nothing unexpected.

Quite frankly, anybody who missed this on account of being tired from the Guv made the wrong choice. But hey, more space for the rest of us!

Haha that explains why it sounded different... I only remember seeing one person though?

Just forget I said anything. I was still trying to wake up, didn't have the brainpower for complicated mental tasks like recognizing faces.

It was a fun cruise, not my favorite
Wasn't feeling any of the music.
Best set was Baby Joel.

I honestly had more fun at Reign.
meh.. oh well

AGREED

Baby Joel's set saved it for me and was the only one I really danced to. BUT the people I went with were awesome so i still had a good time. BUT was a much bigger fan of the music on the last beats ahoy cruise.

Posted by djbruuen on Jul-02-2008 23:06:

just curious, did you find the music more 'commercial' then if they had played at a club?

i've never been on a boat cruise, but personally i don't think i'd be down for hardcore minimal beats on a beautiful sunny day, save that for the sketchy clubs.

ps. anyone know where i can see some pics from the event?

Posted by The Ear on Jul-02-2008 23:09:

Friends + Fun + Sun + Fanciulli = What I was looking for goin on my 1st cruise in 4 years.

I got even more than that.

I got to hear Star Guitar at the close. (Been waiting for that for years!)

Top marks to everyone on the boat!

(I won't even complain that we let the dock nearly an hour late & got back 30 min early)

nope. Not commercial/cheesy.

There were a couple of classic tunes which were probably overplayed back in their times...but hearing those sounds at a party today is such a supreme reminiscence.
