The Current State of Humor

Is beginning to trouble me. Everywhere I look (especially on youtube) where humor is presented that requires a little thought, less and less people are understanding it.

For instance, I've seen several places protesting this site:
http://www.puppyprofits.com/

Come on people.
Remember the whole Bonsai Kitten fiasco?

I was watching some funny stuff on youtube that and there's tons of comments displaying total lack of understanding that the content is intended to be humorous.

Discuss if you want.

I blame 4chan, 2chan, /b/ and a lack of people trying to be funny or those trying too hard.

/b/ is a section of 4chan.

And terrible things are very funny. 4chan is merely a congregation of people who take delight in mocking things that society has deemed excluded from mocking due to... well, frankly, due to backwards standards for humour. No, it's not sophisticated or well thought-out, but that's certainly not the point.

And anyways, if you are so quick to blame one party, it's clear you don't understand the humour... which doesn't bother me a bit, it's just too bad for yourself that you don't see the enjoyment in such bullshit behaviour.

i find the odd bit that i've seen from there funny but i think there's too many people who drag it all out so that what began as funny gets not-so.

Do people really fight Chihuahuas against St. Bernards?

Mismatched fights such as this, though an entertaining thought, are a thing of legend.

LOL

See, I think the stuff on 4chan is hilarious.
Sure, some people on there don't know when to use a certain meme, but that's very few people.
Take "LOLcats"
99% of the shit on there is NOT funny because people just slap misspelled sentences over random pictures of cats. Not funny. What IS funny is a cat in a funny position with 2 or 3 words. Hence the success of "Invisible Bike" "Monorail Cat" and "I has a blu stufs."

Plus, there's always new memes and stuff being posted on 4chan so it's continually fresh.

Posted by noikeee on Jul-03-2008 00:24:

The problem with 4chan is people being morons and repeating it all over the internet for, like, 2 years after it started. The fact that most of it you need to be a bit of a internet nerd to get it, doesn't help it neither (I sadly understand everything). But some can be quite funny.

What are we exactly bitching at in this thread, humour in general, or internet humour? Two different things IMO.

that's exactly a problem. When this random bint on my facebook has pics up at times of them acting like shes not 35 years old, but 12, then u know it's past funnay

Posted by wizniz on Jul-03-2008 00:27:

what part of 35 yr olds acting like 12 yr olds isnt funny?

the action itself is just the jokes theyr'e trying to tell with as kadamony said, shitty taglines, makes it reverse-funny

btw, "creepy homeless cat is stalking at you" just went past the window next to me... this mother****** kept staring at me yesterday night, and popped up right now again

i need to take a photo and send it to the internets.

ya i agree hearing old people use memes outside of context is awkward and slightly painful, so "plus one", rite?! RITE?! oh god.

I find that humour nowadays revolves almost soley around intense, sardonic sarcasm.

If you can beat someone down and make them feel like a fucking idiot (even if they don't *really* have it coming), then you "win".

I find a lot of people are trying way too hard to be 3 steps "ahead of the game" in their display of humour - while "one-upping" someone out of the blue can be quite humourous, I find that whole-hearted laughter is being replaced by scornful snickering and disdainful side-glances. As if there exists some circle of humour - a very exclusive one that serves as the great seperator of being "in" (i.e. on the side that is producing or encouraging the mockery) or being "out" (on the receiving end of the mockery).

Many times, the entity in question that is "outside" the realm of this sarcastic humour is nothing but a 3rd person plural pronoun: i.e . "they"
ex. "I can't believe the stuff THEY are coming up with these days."
"Pretty soon THEY'll be demanding X and Y - what IS this world coming to?"

Well, with that, you're getting into why most people seek external social validation. DUMMY!

It certainly fucking is. Why must you be so insistent on hiding our love?

Spare me. Bas and I have known about each other from the beginning. There's a reason I always come over after Bas has just had his way with you.
