GLOW - July 19th..Free All Night Event @ Santa Monica Pier

25,000 capacity all night event at Santa Monica Pier.... hmmm sounds like fun? Anyone down? hehe

====================================

http://www.smgov.net/smarts/glow/

GLOW is a FREE, all-night event taking over the Santa Monica pier on Saturday, July 19 from 7pm to 7am. From the sand to the sea up to the Pier and Palisades Park, there will be 20 multi-media art installations, music by KCRW DJs and much more.

A collection of international artists will transform the iconic Southern California spot into a premier art destination from dusk until dawn, with a dazzling array of effervescent sights, sounds and interactive activities.

GLOW is the ONLY event to have ever received permission to use the historic Santa Monica Pier and beach as an all-night venue and more than 25,000 people are expected to attend.

The solar-powered Ferris Wheel will host a revolving orchestra, "tumbleweeds" of recycled material will float on the ocean illuminated by LEDs, SASSAS with dublab will take over the carousel to present Tonalism, an ambient sound and projected image environment, and Shih Chieh Huang will turn the path under the Pier into Neptune's Net. Details on ALL the art projects can be found at www.glowsantamonica.com.

DJs Garth Trinidad, Raul Campos, and Jeremy Sole from Santa Monica-based public radio station KCRW (89.9Fm and KCRW.com) will provide the soundtrack on the Pier, with drawings and animation created by a collective of Tagtool artists as a backdrop.

Inspired by the wildly successful Nuit Blanche in Paris, GLOW takes its spirit from the fabled grunion that live in local waters and come ashore several times a year to spawn in the sand creating a momentary sensation of iridescence.

The event does sound cool but...I'm wondering if there will even be enough parking?

I imagine the parking lot right next to the pier will stay open and doubt many spots will be used by people just going to the beach...considering it's nighttime!

That lot if huge and can prob take care of a huge chunk of the people who are gonna attend.

Re: GLOW - July 19th..Free All Night Event @ Santa Monica Pier

What kind of music and crowd will be there?

Posted by DjWoody on Jul-03-2008 19:22:

It looks like it's an ARTS Crowd. And since KCRW is involved, I'm assuming the music will be very eclectic!!! WHICH IS GOOD!!!!!! I love KCRW Events. They always bring a beautiful crowd!

Some of my coworkers said they were planning to go. I'll try and post some info from them next week.

I needed my sleep last night.

there was really nothing to GO to......i guess people were expecting some huge party which didn't happen. could've used a lot more music. imo this was a whole marketing ploy for the city of sm to get in some extra business.

however......it was fun watching that lighshow on the beach.....on ACID!!!!!!!!

Dunno

Went for like an hour. There had to be at least 30,000 poeple there and they had no consesssion stands to buy drinks or anything. It was a cluster fuck couldn't even find where they were playing music. All in all terrible. Not reall ysure what the event was about since all tyhe restaurants were closed and they weren't sell ing anything. How are they suppose to make money?

Clusterfuck is right! But it could have been funner if we had planned better, took food, drinks, got a good place on the sand...

Did anyone stay til Sunrise? I left around 2 and there were still many many people coming and going.

we stayed till sunrise, but that's only because i was frying balls. that 3d lightshow on the beach was worth it though.

like i said it wasn't much of an event. when i got there the cops weren't letting anymore ppl in through the pier entrance because it was too overcrowded.

The music on the pier was good (prog) at about 11pm but the hoards of people kept me (and a lot of others) from staying longer than 10 mins.

The water wall projection was actually good, and the illumination migration (glowsticks in the sand) was a clever idea, but the rest was really a non-event. But hey, it was free, the first time they've done and it got a good turn out for it. Lets hope they improve next year....
