New laptop
c0r..
i bought a new laptop a couple days ago b/c it was such a good price at Best Buy, but I haven't opened it yet b/c i'm wanting to read more reviews on it and hear other peoples opinions.. there is a 15% restocking fee if i open it so it stays sealed for now...
Gateway M-6846 - 15.4 screen, 1.8GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD for $723.99 and then the $279.99 service plan... (im going to Iraq again so i need a new comptuer for the trip and the service plan will cover all accidents except for submersion in water)
anything better out there for that price or is this a POS in a box i bought and i need to be weary???
i already talked to Ben about this and value your great opinions..
Gateway are shit. And be more specific with the Processor.
processor's kinda slow at first glance but it sounds like a decent deal for 700 bucks. gateways are shit though, as mike said

so how do processor and RAM differ?
i thought the higher RAM you have the faster it is?
btw the RAM on my laptop now is 512mb and i have a 1.5GHz processor
si and non in a way.
it looks like a good price. the one thing i am suspect is the shared video memory. i am one who likes the video memory seperate from the physical memory.

Overall, it's an okay laptop. I don't know if it's good value as I'm not in touch with the American market. And yes, the more RAM the better. Although if you're using XP (which I recommend you downgrade to) then 4Gb is a bit excessive as 32bit version of XP will only make use of 2Gb of it. That's not a problem though. |
Vista is sluggish, it looks shit and fruity, and lots of older software and hardware won't work with it. It's a total memory hog, and it won't ever become the industry standard OS. It won't be long before we start seeing glimpses of Windows 7. Vista will in all likeliness eventually be cast aside just like Windows ME was.
XP Pro is about as stable as a Microsoft product has ever been and uses fuck all memory in comparison. Everything will run A LOT quicker, even if all your RAM isn't being used.
First of all, that extended warranty plan is an absolute ripoff. You already have a 1 yr manufacturer warranty, and the way technology prices keep dropping, you will likely be able to buy an equally powered laptop 3 years from now for the price you paid for the warranty alone. It's not worth it.
If you insist on having a 3 year warranty, I found a MUCH better deal for you. It's $300 cheaper AND it's faster than your machine:

Just make sure you uninstall all the messenger programs and other junkware Dell bundles with most PCs. Once you do that, it will be blazing.

should be good if all you want to do is browse the internet and watch porn on windows media player
- Gateways are shit. Agreed with Mike.
- Both ram and CPU (processor) are critical. If either one are slow, your system will be slow. Your CPU handles every single component in your computer along with doing lots of operations, if this is slow, your whole system is. Ram is important for applications, basically, to make them run faster and load quicker.
- It's a total memory hog. It is the way it pages ram. Most applications get a lot of ram which is why you see much usage, however when a memory intensive application comes in, Vista dumps the ram into the page file freeing for that application. It's not as bad as you think.
32bit uses up to 4.
64bit uses 4+.

- Core 2 Duo is an amazing proc.
- anyway, you don't need much power at all. 1GB (2gb ideal) min ram, get a nice dual core proc, phenoms, core 2 duos, anything with dual core will be good enough for your usage. worry about hd space. with what you want to do, you dont need to spend an arm and leg on it. so i think you'd be happy with your purchase. id suggest an HP though.

Are you sure you'll need more than 120GB? Honestly? I download tons of music, movies, and porno on my 120GB and I still have 30GB left.
120 gigs is plenty of space for pretty much anything.
I have 100 gigs free on my 120gig HD.

Pshhhh you PC users. I just bought a MacBook with a 2.4 core duo, 250 gig HD, 4 gigs of ram, 8x Dual layer DVD burner and a free 16 gig iPod Touch for 1300.
//Goes back to XCode and Eclipse
I'm buying either an Acer Aspire One or an MSI Wind.

Im going to say no on the Gateway. I know a lot of people that had bad experience with them back in the day. In fact, I didnt even know they made computers anymore. I thought they'd given that up.
Look at Mikey Mike nerding it up in here. What a fag.

Why are you going back to Iraq?
