where has all the proper house gone...?

i dunno if it's just our group of friends who have been noticing this, but lately it seems that good stompy house sets- you know the kind that make you smile and want to shake your ass- amongst toronto residents are becoming more and more scarce.

it seems everyone is leaning alot towards minimal or tribal as of late, leaving us true house heads wondering why this is.

is it just the direction electronic music is taking, is it dj's wanting to expand their versatility, or is it just good ol' fashioned house music isn't cool anymore?

it's a shame, truely, because it has been since before the new year i can rememebr a really chuggy, stompy, dirty house set- anyone else noticing this at all, and why do you think this is?

I always thought that the music would get faster and harder but it seems to have regressed...

And Tribal has gone the way of house as well..

Ppl are just being trendy in my opinion...

What is "the music"? There is tons of upbeat music being produced right now. Techno (not minimal or tech house) is coming back in a big way again with the DJs who used to play a lot more minimal. The "New Age" Electro ala Ed Banger Records and MSTRKRFT has been blowing up for a while now too.

Electro house sucks!

we need some funky, vocal House DJ in Toronto!!

Posted by gummybear on Jul-05-2008 04:32:

try to get out to some of the parties promoted by pat boogie...

not so sure about tribal, but definitly the last time i've been out its all electro/minimal house. Spent the last hour searching for tracks on Beatport and the trend is there too, everything is very hard with only a few notes in there. I've always like the beats in house more than trance, but house needs to get some melody back...i'm sure people are producing it but i'm having a hard time finding it...

i agree with this as well, however you can't lump all house in together ( lets not get into splitting hairs when it comes to 'identifying' genres).

i'm not talking dicso/ diva shit. i'm talking dirty, chuggy, stompy house. the kind when the dj is going off all you can do is smile to yourself, shake your head and think 'when is this guy going to let up and give me a break here'.

a good example of such a set was one dekoze spun 2 years ago at the Drink during the 10 year anniversary of the Guv. that room was going OFF.

huge difference.

and sadly you just don't hear sets like that much anymore.

they lately seem to leave you unsatisfied- like have sex for hours and never blowing your load, to be blunt.

Funky vocal house is real house music. That's where shit began.

If you want stompy grating electro house, I believe you can find it by going back to 2004.

Amen...

I was standing right next to him for that whole set playing with the lights...

I swear i was a little more deaf afterwards...

But what a night that was...

Yes there are still good upbeat tracks still being produced and played...

I'm just talking about the trend for the majority of DJ's...

There's lots of proper house DJ's and producers out there, they're just being ignored in Toronto for the most part because everyone is too concerned with the flavour of the month.

Ps. LOL at some of the responses. So predictable.

i cant agree with you on that one.
everything evolves and that doesnt mean the new stuff is not "real". hell, that means we aren't real humans based on your theory.

bingo.

It also seems like every local dj is playing the same shit. They might as well bring one cd book and share.

Time to check out some different locals then. For some reason everyone seems to think the handful of guys that get their cocks sucked here are the only ones Toronto's got.

I know what's up Ms. jennypie. We share the same views.

Then again, this is why proper house parties are second to none... it's cause all the soul-less drones are partying in the typical spots.
