Do you listen to your own tracks?

I know - the question sounds kinda dumb at first glance, but I'm curious to know how many of you actually listen to your own tracks on a regular basis purely for listening pleasure. Of course, we all listen for analytical purposes, but I have a few songs that I just really enjoy listening to on a regular basis - does that seem egotistical?

I do enjoy alot to listen to my music .
It is nothing wrong with it, is just music .

Kopi =o.

Sometimes, yeah.

My tracks aren't as good as I want them to be yet, so they don't get "pleasure listening" anywhere near as often as tracks done by other people, though.

Yeah, all the time.

Posted by StanVoid on Jul-09-2008 18:13:

that's a huge part of why i make music - cuz it's just how i like it! there's nothing like getting goosebumps from your own track

Posted by cybernetica on Jul-09-2008 18:52:

I produce music exactly the way I like it so yeah. I guess I'm my own favorite artist.

As a general rule, I actually do not listen to my own tracks. At this point I'm not particularly speedy in making music, due to time constraints, so I'm generally pretty sick of my own stuff by the time I actually finish it. I'm not sure why this is, but I suspect it because I have trouble listening to my own stuff objectively. I'm always in "analytical" listening mode. As I get better at producing, this seems to be becoming less of a problem, but I still haven't overcome it at this point.

However, Its seems that this rule also applies to others tracks as well, as if I have heard a track too many times, I won't put it on a mixed CD, no matter how good it is.

I do sometimes go back and listen to my tracks after a few months or so, and its only then that I can listen to it and actually enjoy it (and judge objectively whether it sucks or not).

lately almost only

Yeah I do it all the time. It's music that I've created for myself so I don't see why I shouldn't.

My songs sound really amateur so i don't listen to it that much. I only listen to ones while i am making it and for a week after (not for analytical purposes). Then i am tired of my music. Cybernetica said he makes music the way he likes it, but for me i can't do that yet.

the best thing is to leave a track for a few months then put it on ure ipod or something so your getting a fresh listen to it. on that first listen alot of stuff surpises ypou rather than you going that hi-hat is to high

Yeah, I think you really have to get into your own stuff to have any chance of anyone else liking it. Otherwise someone else may really love it and you'll be like "really? nah, let's listen to some Tiesto instead, his songs are much better".

Of course, it does take a while to get to the stage where you're really happy with what you create.

I remember years ago when I was in a heavy band (I played guitar and wrote the songs), I was in a car with the other guys in the band, driving to a rave or something, just chatting about stuff, had this music playing in the background. I was just grooving to it, not really concentrating on it, just engrossed in the conversation. Then the guitar riff changes and I'm like "damn, this music is awesome". I keep listening while we're talking and finally say "this music is awesome, who is this?" and the other three guys are like "are you serious?" And I'm all mystified at their reaction, I just say "yeah, why, who is it?" And I think the vocalist just said "It's us, man". It just felt really cool to have a glimpse of one of our songs the way someone who's never heard it may hear it.

It's only happened one time, not with any of my dance music yet...but I do enjoy listening to my songs...

One question for all, have you ever gotten goosebumps of listening to your own tracks ?

ONE of my tracks, yes. A DnB remix I did last summer, and I don't even listen to DnB that much at all. I feel it's my best job thusfar.

I get goosebumps listening to some of the vocalists that have sung on my tracks. I think I'm always more impressed by what others do than what I do.

early works did. caus i had realy uplifting melodies. but quality sucked lol.

Only time I really get pleasure from one of my tracks is the first time I render it on CD and hear it in my car.

Everytime after that its nothing but analyzing and critiquing what could be better.
Matter a fact, I don't really enjoy most music now & days lol.

Tracks that I use to love from Ferry when I listen to now I analyze too much to really enjoy. Guess its like a sickness of some sort.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Jul-10-2008 22:02:

well its harder to enjoy others music when u understand how its made, the magic somehow is lost imo. but if u get drunk u realy dont care about that shit anymore and just having fun listening

just to nit pick.

/\ NO, he is just a guy with a BF. Doesn't mean he is gay. =]

lol, but seriously, dude has given me some better advice than anyone on this forum with his ability to be unbiased in his opinions. With my recent purchase of the Xiosynth for example.
