La fin du Piknic? Un parcours de golf pour le remplacer...
Votre ville de Montral a tellement soif d'argent (page, contraventions, parcomtres,...) qu'elle propose l'impensable!
Ceskberg and Associates is currently developping a new project in Canada, in partnership with the city of Montreal administration. The Club de Golf Le Ste-Helene will be a normal 72 golf course located on the Ste-Helene Island inside the Parc Jean-Drapeau. This beautifull site is located minutes away from downtown Montreal and is a 15 minutes walk from the Montreal Casino, La Ronde amusement park, and the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, host of the F1 Grand Prix of Canada. If approved before October 2008, it should be ready for opening in the Summer of 2010.
The estimated construction costs of $125 million will mainly cover the acquisition of a section of the park, consctruction of the 18 holes, modifications to the Biosphere structure to include a Pro Shop and cantina. This will not interfere with the Environment Museum. Of course, the actual historical vocation of the site will not be altered at all. All existing infrastructures are kept and a large portion of the Park will still be freely available to everyone.
Ceskberg and Associates is also concerned about any environmental issue for this kind of project. As for example we use only biological manure for course construction and maintenance. Also, a team of experts selected by the local authorities will ensure that everything is done to minimize the environmental impacts of the whole construction process.
The Biosphere, host of the Environment Museum, is shaped like a Golf ball. (picture from W.T.)

oh no and I just discovered this amazing place.... Damnnnn
this is fucking stupid, who cares about golf. man there's 100s of golf courses, does it have to be right there in the middle of the island??
but I knew piknic was too good to be true....something was gonna come along and change things...maybe this will be it...maybe something else.
I like the jardin des floralies site, potential replacement?
Honestly the best news I've heard in a while!
However, the feathers in the city will get blown to somewhere else, they always do, I only hope they can open their minds and begin to support Montreals' locals.
This seems like a proposal and not something approved by the city... yet. (journal de montreal first page anyone?)

I'm guessing that would mean no more Parc Jean Drapeau either...
that is a pretty significant outdoor venue for concerts and festivals over the summer months.
of course, all speculation right now

Bah...I'm not too worried.
Remember when they tried moving the Casino to Bassin Peel. They were supposed to have a permanent Cirque du Soleil show there, etc. It was an amazing project that was quickly canned because of a handful of people on welfare, complaining about losing their housing...and the general public complaining about having the casino closer to the city would lead to more pathological gambling and thus more socio-economic problems etc etc.
Of course I'm not comparing a downtown Casino project with a Golf course on parc jean drapeau...but the same thing will happen with this project. Wait till the environmentalists start screaming about losing a public parc. In Quebec, people want the government to throw all kinds of money at every services we use but they are against any types of revenue generating initiatives...
PJD is definitely one of Montreal's most precious assets..but I'm not against doing other initiatives to generate revenues for the city/gov on it. Remember that a big part of this island was built by man to host the expo 67. It was built to attract tourists in the first place.
I'm just sick of big projects being teared appart in this province because of the classic ''syndrome du petit peuple quebecois''...scared of big capitalist initiatives.

so much drama for nothing
welcome to QUEBEC
conscience davoir pris.
Hlas, la rcration est termine.
On te surprend consommer, tu seras expuls.
Tu as surconsomm, on te donnera ton cong.
