Where is the 2010 World Cup?

LONDON -- FIFA president Sepp Blatter has spoken to three countries about hosting the 2010 World Cup if a natural catastrophe forces it away from South Africa.

It forms the Plan B drawn up by FIFA with less than two years until soccer's most important tournament heads to Africa for the first time.

Concerns are mounting about South Africa fulfilling its hosting obligations after Tuesday's announcement that the Port Elizabeth stadium is unlikely to be completed in time for next June's Confederations Cup tuneup event.

The World Cup preparations have been plagued by stadium construction delays, security fears, transport problems and the possibility of power outages.

"I have spoken to three possible, not only possible, but three associations and countries that would be able to stage the World Cup in one year's time," Blatter said in an interview broadcast on Thursday by Sky News. "They need one year [to prepare]."

Blatter would not name the countries when asked if 1966 host England was one of his options.




i wonder how likely this scenario is to play out and i'd like to know who the countries are.

Its going to happen in South Africa... Fifa is full of a bunch of vaginas.

Anyhow cant wait till the next round when we play the US, Cuba and T&T

2018 in Europe (confirmed by Joseph Blatter). Spain is one of first option for Blatter.

Spain had the World Cup in 1982. It's England's turn for 2018 and then Spain should get it the next time it goes to Europe in 2030 or whatever. Fair is fair!

they were spitting the same bullshit back in '02. Korea was behind on a couple of stadiums. Japan supposedly had one that wasn't going to be done in time. buuuuuut guess what? everything went on time.

this is probably just some stupid british propaganda - "Hey look WE already have the stadiums!"

Italy had in 1990, Germany in 74 AND 2006, France 1998, Spain 1982, etc.

England have the stadiums (Wembley, Old Trafford, Emirates, St. James Park and many more), the home of football, have some of the best security in the world and have controlled hooliganism the best in Europe the last 15 years.

Why are they not deserving for 2018?

well England do have the stadiums but more importantly England is a relatively safe nation to travel to for events like these. You can't say the same for South Africa, let's be honest. I wouldn't go there! There's fucking 50 murders a day in that country.

I'm sure they will be ready, but I can see massive logisitical problems at the next World Cup in terms of security

We're in negotiations to make a joint hosts proposal with Spain for 2018. As long as they don't build new stadiums and adapt the ones from Euro 2004, it's ok for me.

Portugal has said it is interested, and the head of the country's football federation said in May he would raise the issue with Spanish authorities, but I think we are not interested...

Portugal could host it. And as noikee said, dual hosting is also a posibility. Most cities are safe to travel for these kind of events, unlike what you said.

Portugal just had the Euro four years ago. Have you been to South Africa? I have once and I did not feel safe in Johannesburg at all. I don't mean it as any offence, but come on man...the crime and murder rates in that country are through the roof. It's as dangerous, if not more, than Mexico for tourists these days.

Anyway if they can pull it off, then great for them. Africa deserves to have the World Cup, but the next time it comes to Europe, I think it's England's turn and they will easily put up the best bid. Whether or not they can get through all the politics and England hating in FIFA (Blatter for one) is another issue altogether.

Haven't been to South Africa myself but I imagine its a bit different from the rest of the world. With all the internal struggles currently taking place. Wouldn't be suprised either way if the Cup was held there or they turn around and move it somewhere else.

Besides England and Spain possibly holding the WC I wouldn't be suprised to see States step up either.

lol do you guys ever watch the news? The robberies, kidnappings and murders of tourists in Mexico and South Africa are a real concern these days. I've been to Mexico City, Johannesburg and London and I know which city I feel safer in, that's for sure. Nobody should be surprised if there are security problems during the next World Cup. No, I don't mean terrorists, but I mean how visiting supporters will be treated. As a white person, I have to be honest...I've never had so many fucking dirty looks as I did in SA (understandable I suppose but I'm Canadian and had nothing to do with apartheid) and in Mexico.

But that's not the main issue here. Hasn't Blatter said that Europe will be hosting the WC in 2018 for sure? The USA should piss off and wait until 2022 in my opinion, but we'll see.
