Essential Games - The PS2

Got gifted a PS2 slimline from a university friend who just picked up a new PS3.

Would be much obliged if you could give me a list of maybe 2 or 3 games that you would say are worth picking up preowned somewhere.

So far I have :

Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas.
Metal Gear Solid 2
Pro Evolution Soccer 6
Killer 7
Hitman 2

Thanks a bunch.

I'm not a huge fan of driving or racing games.

PS2 is practically the best console of all-time. The library is endless, there are games for literally everybody. Somebody who says they don't like the PS2 is somebody who says they don't like video games.

The original Red Faction was loads of fun. The story is intriguing, the environments are destructible (most of them), and the weaponry is badass. Check it out. Red Faction 2 has better multiplayer, but I hear the single player isn't as fun.

Ico is one of the most undersold games of all-time; truly a piece of software that deserves to be up there with Gran Turismo 3 and the GTA's in terms of sales. The game is a work of art and a simple description will only insult the true beauty of the game. Try and find it, and play it all the way through.

Tekken Tag Tournament is loads of fun with 4 people, plus is probably the best all-around Tekken game available on the PS2. Tekken 5 was pretty badass, too.

The NBA Street games are fantastic as well, kind of like NBA Jam, but not as crazy, and the game is more so focused on tricks and what have you. Try and find Volume 3.

Dude, I could go forever and ever. The best bet is to first go on over to the review section at IGN, and look at all the games that have received 9's (there's quite a few). Then ask us if the game is truly good or not.

I highly recommend Shadow of the Colossus and Resident Evil 4. For platformers, check out the Sly Cooper series, the Ratchet and Clank series, and Jak 1-3.

This should also help you get started! (check 3 posts down for a list of good cheap games)

I picked up a copy of Metal Gear Solid 3 today.

Should be nice.

Will pick up Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Cheers for the tip about IGN. Going to have a good rummage about.

Keep them coming please.

That'll keep you going for a few weeks.

Silent Hill 3, that's a must. But you'll miss half the story if you haven't played the first one through, and through.

PC version is lightyears better, though. And its an oldie, so most PC's will probably handle it.

PS2

Great thread, seeing as how i just refound my PS2 and am thinking of getting rid of my Wii. I think a greatsite is www.metacritic.com.
it takes the reviews of a shitload of sites and then gives it an average to score from. I got some GREAT AZZ games using that site, like Freedom Fighters(1st person shooter thats dope, at a local shoprite???!!!)

My advice would be to try to limit yourself to certain genres. Like what would be great first person shooters? RPGs? stratgies? Driving? Flying? adventure? I think a topnotch video game collection should have high quality games from each area.

let's keep this thread going i nned to pick-up some cheap great games.

get rid of the Wii in favor of the PS2?? Theres a lot of fun games on the Wii bro....

Don't know if this was already mentioned, but for us old schoolers who were around before the Guitar Hero/Rock Band craze, Harmonix, makers of Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, one of the two), made two little known gems called Frequency and it's sequel Amplitude. They were basically Guitar Hero without the guitar. They featured real songs by real artists and and multiplayer up to 4 people with the multi-tap.

It's some of the most fun you'll have on a ps2, I guarantee it.

True, I still gotta get my hands on mario cart. Mario galaxy is mad fun and medal of honor 2(i think with the zapper) is decent. I am disappionted that there arent more zapper using games. Mario olympics sux my nuuuutz. I have the zelda Wii game that i haven't even played yet so thats a possibility. Do you have any suggestions?

I should mention that my gaming as well as my clubbing has taken a SERIOUS hit due to the birth of my daughter last year. you should have seen my wife's face when i tried to get a game or tqo in when i was "watching" the baby.
