What is Paul Oakenfold's exact role in the music...
Hi, I don't know much about the producing/recording process and what goes on within that...I've heard paul oakenfold is almost exclusively a 'remixer'. If this is true or not explain for me if you can. Like, what do remixers do exactly, and does he write original songs too? Thanks...
-confused
1. He could have a good claim to be the founder of house music.
2. He DJ'd for many years
3. He then became a producer of all sorts of music, mainly house & electronic
4. He opened his own reocord label "perfecto" with steve osbourne (sp)
5. He does remix tunes also.
in other words he does everything. a label owner that dj's remixes and producers. hes one of the biggest infulences of the trance/house industry what ever way you look at it.

Whoops...
Egad I didn't mean to get people mad at each other, I was meaning a technical question, like literally, what does he do? What does being a remixer consist of? How much do you change the original songs/how? Do you write your own ever...stuff like that...I guess I was misleading before...
cheers

Oakenfold produces his own songs, DJ's, and owns his own record company. I dont think he remixes however. But if he did, then that would mean he would try to remake "his own version" of the song with his own instruments, while keeping the same "melody" of the original track.
heres a list of oakey's production, remixes, albums,
http://www.members.shaw.ca/urbantrain/oakeydisco.html
Hmm.. that list looks incomplete.. I mean, there is supposed to be at least The Space Brothers - Shine (the album, not the single) remix disk...
But anyway.. personally I used to adore Oakey.. I still respect him.. He makes / spins great music..

Self appointed God!!!!
Thinking he can charge $50 for a one hour set... bah... I say... bah!!!
What hasn't he done.
Oakey wasnt one of the founders of House but he was one of the founders of Acid Hous when he started the first Acid House nights in the UK at Heaven.
He then moved on to explore the Goa sound from India then mixed argualbly the best Essential Mix of all time, The Goa Mix, in 1994. Since then he set up Perfecto Records and basically brought Cream into the spotlight with his 2 year Residency in 1997 and 1998.
In 1999 he was one of the major reasons for the Trance Explosion that we all love. He did a World Tour with the Essential Mix and travelled to all corners of the globe spreading the Trance sound throuhgout the world while still setting places like Gatecrasher on fire with awsome live mixes. God I miss this era!
He then moved on and as Trance became more popular he started moving away from it and is once again trying new things.
Today he plays alot of Breaks and new style music. While still retaining Trance as his major sound.
If things go as before Oakey will make breaks and new styles extremely popular. But he always changes to explore new sounds and new ideas.
Right now he is currerntly touring the US alot to try and educate many of them. He's probably succeeding more than anyother DJ in breaking into America. I wish he would leave America and remember other poorer less fortunate countries like Australia that want him back!!
But thats basically what he has done for the music.
Quite alot ey!

Hear,hear!!

Whatever he is or what role he plays, i wil always look up to him and have respect for him.
Its true he did some mediocore stuff in 20001 but Oakie is back in 2002, and better than ever!
My fav DJ of the year so far

| And one more thing: In the other thread about Oakenfold, somebody started flaming me for saying that he's "arrogant." Well, only an arrogant DJ could add voiceovers to his album ("Another World") saying "Are you going to see Oakenfold? Oakenfold is the best DJ. We are going out tonight to see Oakenfold. The music builds and builds. The world's best DJ, Paul Oakenfold." Imagine all the people who wasted their money on this album and can't even listen to it because of these pathetic voiceovers. I rest my case. |

Ah Oakie bashing ... everyone's favourite pastime on here
I won't pretend that the guy is my musical cup of tea any more, he's long ago moved on from spinning trance, for whatever reason. But for fucks sake give the man some RESPECT
