Umm....my first question to you is..."why the fuck are you going to Detroit to vacation?" Is this some sort of joke?

dude, read the post. It'd take a lot of crack to want to vacation in detroit. I'm talking about flying out of detroit.

So why not say that?

Detroit vacations = VACATIONING IN DETROIT.

Check buffalo... usually the same types of cheap prices and its a shorter drive from toronto.

Agreed though that toronto flights are robbery

Posted by djbruuen on Jul-18-2008 12:01:

well of course buffalo is the first thought, they're definitely a great option when traveling within the US, but for mexico, they don't tend to have direct flights, and detroit was a better deal.

u dont get direct flights but the price is right and the drive is cheaper (1.5 hours instead of almost 4 each way).

I also like buffalo airport because u can check in and be in the waiting area by the gate in less than 15 mins.

Weigh the better deal in detroit against $1.25 litre gas to get there and im sure buffalo will be about the same price if not cheaper plus you dont necissarly need a hotel room in buffalo!
I went to windsor when gas was cheaper and it was about $80 round trip in gas. Probably 100 these days. Buffalo will probably cost 30-35

Also parking in buffalo is only 40-60 bucks per week! Cheap as far as airports go

Posted by djbruuen on Jul-18-2008 15:05:

well i'm not arguing that buffalo is usually a good deal all around. Especially when compared to Toronto...but take these prices

Toronto = $1584
Detroit = $1200
Buffalo = $1410

plus my gf has a toyota echo, so gas won't be too brutal. probably $50r/t for gas. (a full tank should do it)

and since we have to factor in a hotel ($125 for the sheraton airport which includes 8 days of parking, so thats pretty good)

add that up and you're still only looking at around $1280-90pp...to make the deal even sweeter, the detroit and buffalo prices are actually for 8nights opposed to the typical 7night packages here.

I did read the post, and I just read it again. The way you word the first post, it really sounds like you're asking about vacations in detroit. You should have been more clear (i.e. flying out of detroit).

Also...if you're flying out of Detroit, make sure you're working in travel cost to get there. $120ish round trip for the train (to Windsor, plus crossing the border). $100 roughly in gas, plus toll and paying to leave your car there...whereas maybe you could get a ride to the airport if you're leaving from the GTA.

if ur driving into detroit, just make sure u take the tunnel instead of the bridge cos it seems like the tunnel isnt as strict (for lack of a better word to call what the US customs assholes do)

For someone who has lived in Windsor her whole life. I have never been pulled in at the bridge, whereas I have a number of times at the tunnel. So I wouldn't trust that.

Ya...it's SOO touch and go. You have absolutely no idea. Same with border lines ups. You can't really predict peak times. For instance, some weekends going shopping in the States. I can get to the border at the same time on 2 different saturdays and one time it'll be packed, other times I'll go right through. My dad too when he goes to work in the morning at 5:30am, sometimes it's packed, other times...no problem. It's SO annoying.

December 2005.

Going to Bleu in Detroit.

Pulled in at midnight.

"Why are you even coming into my country?"

Oh fuck.

Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck.

Oh shit that was at the tunnel.

Posted by djbruuen on Jul-19-2008 18:58:

interesting...i'll probably be entering detroit around 3am, and i have nothing to lie about, so i'm predicting a smooth crossover. whats the toll rate now?

oh, and do you pass any extra tolls on the way to the airport? thanks

No, that was after we were inside. And it was more like "Why should I let you into my country? Do you think I want to go into YOUR country? No." Good, b/c we don't want you.

The toll is abour $4 each way (give or take a quarter, depending on if you take the bridge or tunnel). And to my knowledge there are no other toll roads to the airport.

Make sure you give yourself ample time like I said...even if you're crossing at 3am, you have NO idea if it'll be backed up, or if the traffic will be bad. Better waiting at the airport than on the road.

Tunnel and Bridge ain't shit.. no worries....just show them your ticket, your passport you're cool.. they're not stupid, tons of people go through that border each day to get to the airport...

I'd take the bridge... easier to get to from the 401 as it ends, easier to get on the I-94 West which takes you to Metro.... it's a fluid transition. Yeah security is a bit more tight now, they check your trunk, make you turn your car off, but usually it's all good...

Parking, I use this, $10 a day, covered parking garage, 24hr security, frequent shuttles...

And why do you need a hotel in Detroit? Just drive in, park and fly... when you get back, I guess depending on how tired you are, you may want one. But then I would suggest just get across the border, get a hotel in Windsor, maybe stay a night at the new Casino and shit...

I would fly outta Detroit for sure... espeically with the exchange as it is now... AND... AND!

You have been out of the country for 7days plus, so you can bring like $700 back duty free so go do some shopping depending on when your flight returns.... There is a pretty decent mall and shit about 15mins, PM me and i'll get you that info if you want...

Or you can go earlier, do your shopping for your vacation in Detroit then fly... I did/do that for when I got to England, last sept, went to Detroit in the morning, bought my suit, shirt and tie and shoes there, and my luggage then hit up a walmart and bought all the tolietries for the trip to... save money that way too...

IMO...fly out of Detroit...

good tips.

Its a 3hr drive or so to hamilton and our flight coming home lands at 11pm, plus the hotel is $120 with free parking for the duration, so i consider it a very good deal.
