External storage devices

I've had a Lacie external hard drive for a few years, but it's getting to the point where it takes several connect/disconnect/reconnect trials to get my laptop to recognize that the Lacie is connected to it. I want to get a new one but was looking at Maxtor's products. These looked nice to me:

Does anyone have experience with Maxtor products, especially on Macs? Opinions?

A lot of people say Maxtor are rubbish, but I have a 150GB one which is about two years old now and has sat under my computer, connected and powered 24 hours a day, collecting a lot of dust and taking knocks from people's feet, and it has held up beautifully.

I have not had a problem with it yet.

Best idea is to search google for "external hard drive reviews" and see a multitude of opinions on the matter - you will soon find that one or two brands will have a better reputation than the rest.

buy an external enclosure that allows you to put an internal drive in it.

I'm considering the HP Mediasmart Server. Holds about 4 Hard drives, easily swappable from the front. About $700 here.
