Review: Steve Porter @ Footwork
showed up around 1 and was treated to a seriously banging (and extended) set from mr. porter. he seemed to have us wrapped around his fingers. man of the match performance... 10/10!
such a great vibe at fw as usual and saw a few familiar faces -- you know who you are.
perhaps someone can comment on the earlier sets as i was a tad late :/
Cant feel my body...
More very soon...
More please.
</dead>

Ok got there fairly early cuz i was expecting a huge line. Luckily there wasnt one and Aleksandra was dropping some great beats inside. The place started to fill up pretty quickly and then Evan came on. His set was rocking and got the crowd going and ready for Porter. The vibe in Footy was amazing, everyone having fun, drinking and dancing like crazy. Porters set was prolly my set from an international dj all year! I literally dont think i sat down once. Overall awesome nite with some sik djs and great friends!
Highlight of the nite: being outside having a smoke when some random chick and her friends get in line then point at the building and ask "what is this?" They are told its Footwork and she says "is that like a club or something?" they tell her yes and she gets back in line. 2 seconds later she starts complaining that its house music and that she doesnt want house music but she cant get into any other club because of insurance policies on footwear and her footwear is deemed unsafe (um she was wearing heels....
). Then she goes off on some 5 min rant about going home and writing nasty emails to club owners and insurance people and the newspaper and that she is going to look up past court cases to back herself up.... lmao um ok

steve is fuckin hilarious... one of the coolest dudes to hang out with
Great tunes!
Great Friends!
Great night!
& now back to the couch w/ my glass of sangria to rest my aching body lol!!!!
FUN!!!!!!!!!!
So we got there at 12:33 (3 minutes short of guestlist, as if they are that strict about it
) and Evan G was spinning. We went in... I kinda tried to dance, but I wasnt really feeling the music, and well... he looked half asleep. I waited outside until Steve Porter came on...
I believe he came on around 1:30 and for the next 3.5 hours I was completely Porterfied. Bouncy, groovy, banging, wild FUN! Every muscle in my body hurts today. There are no other words to use but pure, fun, party tunage... never ending beats that kept me smiling. By the end it was all I could do to keep moving... but taking a few minutes to sit and catch my breathe was like punishment. I think all of us on the dance floor had sense of accomplishment when he finished. He was a nice fresh sound in the Toronto scene and I hope he comes back soon.... I want MORE... New York trip??
Other things:
-The place filled up quickly around 1 but then seemed to really empty out fast around 2-2:30... but no complaints, more dancing room for me
- Crowd was decent, some interesting folks as well, but that adds to the fun I suppose
- If you are going to get up on the speakers to dance... you better DANCE... however on the same note I came to see Porter spin, not some chick dance off beat... SO GET OFF!!
- Omg Matt you are too funny.
- So nice seeing familiar faces and meeting a few new ones. I had fun with you all <3

Fun night, I haven't really been out since Canada Day! Good to see so many people, many TAs were out last night
The music was great, but he lost me a couple times...It was just slightly too happy for me, but I did really enjoy most of his set when I was inside!
Feeling slightly under the weather today, so another nap is needed lol
Wow -- I need to get some sleep
.
What a rockin night! Steve always delivers and his mixing is so fucking wicked.
The crowd was great, sooo many familiar faces which I love. A+++++++
I <3

GOOD TMES

Amazing night with crazy music, I was not ready for that type of high energy music but fuck it was super fun dancing and going crazy. Porter was really good and really demanding, NO BREAK, JUST DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE!!!!! I would definitely go out to see him again. FW is great and everyone seems to have tons of energy on the dancefloor.
I liked the DJ before porter as well, he had me grooving to some good tracks.

Man oh man, what a set! Thanks to chw for dragging me to the front of the house when I thought I couldn't stand (actually, I could only dance!) First time at footwork. Won't be the last.

My opening set from the night was recorded.. mayyybe I'll post it up soon....
Right click, Save target as to DOWNLOAD Aleksandra's opening set for Porter
Wow, i just found this thread... I did up a review for scenester, i'll throw the link up when it's posted. But I SERIOUSLY must have been at a different party than all you folks. I was really let down by Porter...mistake after mistake, and I didn't feel he had any flow at all in his set. I personally feel he emptied the club out before 3 am with his music!
Aleksandra's set on the other hand. <3 downloaded and listened to it again. Still love it.
Amazing the different viewpoints..
Ok, here's my take of the night.

I was really looking forward to hearing Steve Porter spin live after hearing his two hour radio exclusive on Radio 1 with Pete Tong. I had been cranking that set all week long and loved the never ending high-energy beats weaving layer upon layer of sound. The music had me so pumped every time I threw the set on I couldnt help but have a smile spread across my face, ear to ear. Thats what House music is supposed to do! I spent an exhausting Friday and Saturday (exhausting but amazing) attending the Tony Robbins Firewalker series. Each day involved sessions longer than 10 hours with some serious high energy and high emotion exercises. By 10pm Saturday night I was exhausted, but no less ready to dance it up to Steve Porter. My friends and I arrived at the beginning of the night in order to catch Aleksandras set. This was my first time hearing her live. I had downloaded her promo Dance 2 da Beat 3 mix she released to her Facebook group the week before and had enjoyed it. Let me tell you her set at Footwork that night rocked me (she recorded ityou can download it from her Facebook group or website). She built up the music really nicely. Dark and sexy to begin with, then chuggy thumping beats coming in that were an awesome opener for the positive high energy onslaught that Porter was destined to unleash. Her mixing was great and her shy but positive presence behind the decks almost seemed to contradict the pounding beats coming out of Footworks sound system. Footworks ambiance, draped in muted dark red lighting complimented the mood. The lighting system consisted of four lights, pointing straight down; forming what Schmucky calls spheres of dancing light on the floor. Similar to a Pokmon ball, but completely different. Schmucky got trapped in them once, and I had to rescue himbut thats another epic tale best told elsewhere. After Aleksandra, Evan G hit the decks. He brought the energy up appropriately and the room was really starting to move and fill in. I sat at the back of the dancefloor on this long bench (for lack of a better term) that had a really tall back. For the tall people, Im guessing. Theyre people too, you know. The bass was thumping nicely through the bench and I had a great view of the dancefloor. The lights started moving around now, releasing those trapped in the dancing spheres of hell that had been circularly oscillating for the first hour or so in one spot. Finally, Steve Porter took the decks, and I could hear the excitement building up in the crowdhes here! Hes going to rock us! And then. He sucked. Oh yes, he sucked. Have you ever hear me say a DJ sucks before? Ok, maybe once, when DJ Ping opened up The New Basement. Now let me back up my claim. I have absolutely no doubt that Steve Porter is an amazing DJIve heard his sets! His mixing, his style of music, the energy, the positivityits all completely up my alley! So why would I say he sucked? It all comes down to mixing. Mistake after mistake that kept hic-cupping my vibe. There was very little flow to the track selectionhe would build up the energy in a track, get the crowd hyped, and then slow it right down and pull the bass line out unexpectedlyand not in a very cool way. I had come with a group of friends, so I quickly polled them to see if I was hearing things or being far too critical. Unfortunately, I was not far off the markthey all agreed. To his credit, Porter did drop a few gems I had not heard in the club before. A personal favourite of mine: DJ Misjah & DJ Tim Untitled (Original Mix). LOVE THIS TUNE! The only problem was, he mashed that one up too and took away any punch it had. His torturous mixing and mistreatment as well as a distinct lack of flow took its toll on the club. By 3am only a third of the club remained and only a precious few where high energy at the front to his beats. I could handle it no longer I said my goodbyes to my friends and took my leave of the musical maelstrom. Every DJ has off days. In my opinion, this was one of those days for Steve Porter. The music I heard at Footwork that night with all of its lack of flow, mistakes and sheer lack of passion and vision bore no resemblance to the sets I had listened to nor the testimony of those who had heard Porter before. I hope Porter spins again in Toronto soon so I can erase this horrid set from my mind and replace it with something truly representative of the mans talent. Scenester Magazine Inc. 2007 |
