Getting paid by labels

I wanted someone who is signed to run through what kind of rates you get or up front payments etc.

I had an electro hit called party time which topped all download sites and the label paid me nothing.

Whats an average fee for a tune. whats everyone else getting

Posted by Subtle on Jul-31-2008 17:15:

Nothing.

Posted by sterilis on Jul-31-2008 17:31:

you get paid what you and the label agreed which is in your contract.

Posted by Ry Thomas on Jul-31-2008 17:33:

Did you sign a contract for your track?

Posted by Sonic_c on Jul-31-2008 18:57:

Yeah i did a 50 - 50 deal but they kept saying oh the figures arent back yet then dissapeared for weeks at a time. I checked beatport and its still the best seling track on their label. Ministry of sound put it on the inside track page and beatsdigital said to me of the record it did really well. In the end because i was trying to get signed again i said you can keep the money and i did it on email so the bastards got it in writing .\

I just curious some people get upfront payments wondered if anyone landed a big score from a label?

that doesnt mean shit (the e-mail thing), request a statement and an invoice... even if you said you dont wanna get paid both sides has signed a contract, contact them asap and ask for a statement at least...

Something smells fishy.

In one thread you don't know how to mix a track and here you claim to be signed.

Posted by Ry Thomas on Jul-31-2008 19:47:

What is your artist name and which label was it on?

Maybe he's that guy who posted a while back trying to hire someone to produce tracks for him?

Maybe his hired producer quit and now he's trying to produce for himself?

Oh wait, it's actually this guy

Your logic really doesn't make any sense. Why on earth would you want to be resigned by a label that disappears on you for weeks at a time and then pays you nothing?

Also, try asking the retail outlets (Beatport etc.) for figures. I'm sure if you can prove that you are the artist and explain the situation to them they would furnish you with the figures, especially as they probably don't want to get audited/involved in a court case.

As for the email (even though it's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard someone do in your position), they might not even have it anymore and even if they did, you could easily explain that away in court by saying you were just trying anything to get a response from them as they had been dodging you, and that you knew the contract would stand anyway.

This whole thing sounds really weired to me anyway.

Also, Labels don't want bad press because they will have trouble signing new material in the future, so why not name them on here?

Good try.

Complete BS post. Go look on beatport, there's nothing at the top of any of the charts called "Party Time". Not to mention no specifics are mentioned, label name, artist name, ect. Why do people waste our time with this hogwash. Oh, I forgot, just to mess with us :P

Let's defeat this goofball at his on game, and turn this into a real discussion. Here's my imput:

I've gotten paid by little indie labels. Even if they owe you just $20, they pay you. Most labels are honest. Always find out a little about a label before you sign.

I know how to write songs im learning piano/keyboard etc I know what a compressor does but.... I need to know how to apply this effect together with leveling etc to pull things through my mix

When i make a song when i mix it down the bass lowers and the melodies get lost and it sounds like its coming out of a pillow

One thing that works for me is run it through ozone izotope and turn the freq exiters up that sound ok but its not best practice

Does anyone have a general guidline how to get a punchy kick and off beat bass but allow for the melodies to also be at an audible level

help??

So said the person that top all download sites.

Posted by Sonic_c on Aug-01-2008 08:33:

lets clear this up

Ok fine i knew this would come up. I used to make electro (shit electro) under the name sticky electro. I didnt want to mention because some of the songs are really amature and crap.

www.myspace.com/stickyelectro

I made a song called "party time" I got lucky basically the whole song is not amstered or mixed or anything solely made by an amature in reason alone!

I made a catchy song and people liked it

It got signed to LPH (lets play house recordings) owned by an american dj starsteady.

It is on all the download sites and did well. I didnt want to show you guys because u will all take the mickey probably. I make trance now which is what i always loved and sort of wanted to just put it behind me lol.

http://www.junodownload.com/artists/Sticky+Electro/

this is where you can preview or look if im telling the truth.

I just didnt want to admit to the songs in the player some of your songs sound so well made that it made me feel like really a beginner.

Posted by Sonic_c on Aug-01-2008 08:44:

Im so pissed with this forum twice now i have been ripped once for saying wouldnt it be nice to make trance for a living! and now for asking a question about a real event. you all think im a liar.

I assume this is because i am trying to learn how to make trance properly from you guys, but i have had some success in the past? Right

Why?
