Only in America

Wash. governor forgets ID, cant get into bar

Bouncer turned her away because she couldn't prove shes legal to drink

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire is taking it as a compliment: She was turned away from a bar in the state capital because she couldn't prove she's of legal age to drink.

The 61-year-old governor and her staff had served burgers at the annual Capital Lakefair last weekend and afterward went to a downtown Olympia bar called Hannah's to celebrate.

Gregoire says the man checking identifications at the door told her she couldn't get in without ID, even when others pointed out she's Washington's governor. So she went home, but her husband, Mike, went in.

The governor tells Seattle's KING-TV she feels complimented the bouncer thought she might be under 21.

Hannah's owner, Todd Ruzicka, says his 23-year-old part-time bouncer needs more training.

What the fuck? How the fuck does a 61 year old look under 21?

She doesn't.

It's just that some people are so dumb that they follow rules mindlessly (don't let anyone in without ID) without grasping the actual point behind them (don't admit anyone under twenty-one).

Posted by Project-K on Jul-31-2008 18:39:

Not sure if that's the case in washington but in some places you're required to ID all the time no matter what - just a means of protecting the employees.

this isn't an isolated incident in America, it's happening everywhere including where I live on the east coast.

They've even started mandatory ID checks in movie theaters, something that's never happened before (I can't remember ever showing an ID to see a movie)!!

she doesn't. But you don't understand American culture. The culture is extremely afraid of alcohol (as well as nudity/sex and smoking). The paranoia is so widespread that even mature people are carded.

Stevie Wonder bouncer.

Seriously though, I can see why they would carry out checks on all people now, regardless of how old they 'might' look. It removes any inconsistency in their policy, and protects everyone involved, and it takes away the bouncers right to think.

They are not paid nor given enough information to think.

midgets can be deceiving

How is America "afraid of sex?" We have probably the biggest porn industry in the world...

Or alcohol, for that matter.

I don't think this incident has much to do with "America culture." It's just a bouncer being an idiot...

Posted by CleverName on Jul-31-2008 19:02:

There's a small chance the bouncer recognized her and was just being a prick to The [wo]Man. I'd recognize Florida's governor if I saw him and would brag forever about bouncing him out of the bar, if I were in his place.

I'm not sure how many people would recognize their governor or legislators or anything though. I'm kinda weird like that.

Every country i have ever been to never checked ID's exept here in the US. Its such a pain in the ass. They did card us when we were in highschool but i guess we just looked super young.

We as a society still treat sex as a taboo. Case in point, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson incident.

I mean if she was in her twenties or thirties then I'd understand. But some old fart getting ID'd? I mean I know the guy can get fired for letting someone who isn't 21 inside but if you can clearly see the person is over the drinking age why not let them in? Maybe he knew who she was and didn't want to let her in lol.

One of my favourite sayings is "rules are for the strict observance of fools and the guidance of the intelligent".

Did anyone consider the club didn't want a 61 year old inside, so they came up with the easiest excuse?

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Jul-31-2008 20:25:

I'm pretty sure it was a regular bar rather than a club.

Yep, there aren't any clubs in olympia really (lived there for 9 years.) Not much of anything there tbh.

Dumb ass bouncer. If I was the bar owner, I'de fire him. I'de want all the high-profile people I could get coming to my bar.

maybe because on prime time television its ok to show someones head getting blow off, but a little tit is sacrilege?

I think what this really indicates is that a lot of Americans are hypocritical, not that they "hate sex." In private, Americans have a big appetite for porn -- at least judging by the size of the porn industry here -- and yet many of them express "outrage" at a bare breast on prime-time television.

Posted by Clovis on Jul-31-2008 22:46:

Americans afraid of sex and alcohol...thats rich. We're not. Just the 5% vocal minority who is all religious yell really fucking loud.

Posted by elFreak on Jul-31-2008 22:46:

it all part of the "things that are taboo and not socially acceptable turn me on" factor.

kinda like dubfire.

i get tits on primetime.

winrar

edit: i am not saying americans are afraid of sex, but trust me when i say that america is not even close to being as open about it as much of the western world. As a frog clovis, tu deverais savoir ca.

the british are pretty brutal too, but i understand that because of the hideous women that exist in england
