Finding places to stay in NYC when you don't know anyone

So any of you folks have luck finding places via craigslist and such? I'm looking at spots in the east village... I had a place set up but my roommate-to-be who has been my roommate for a while and a friend since college wound up moving back to boston

Kind of got screwed by the last-minute move but any of you guys have any good stories? horror stories? about finding roommates online and such...

i feel like craig's list works pretty good at finding roommates. You can usually find people that have graduated recently from somewhere looking for roommates. You said you went to Syracuse, right? I know about 8,000,000 SU kids in the city looking for roommates. you might want to try that avenue

Craigslist works really well, although what I would recommend you to do is to do a background check of potential roommates.
I had a really bad experience with someone I found on roommates.com. The guy moved in to the basement in the house I was renting when I was living in MD, ate all my roommate's and my food, didn't pay a cabbie a $30 fare, so the cops where at my house every day, moved in his girlfriend and her 2 kids, screwed me over with last months rent, and smoked crack in the basement with those kids down there sleeping How's that for a horror story? Make sure you do a background check, you never know
