Quitting smoking...
ok.
I've heard the stories, I've seen my grandpa with a 1" diameter hole in his throat, and nothing is helping. It's been enough, but I dont seem to fall into place.
I really am trying to quit smoking. I'm trying the patches this weekend, if they're not overpriced, hopefully. Let's see how that works. I'm really wanting to quit this tobacco shit... a) it's costing me alot of money at $5.60 a pop..and I smoke an average of about a pack a day (that's 20 cigarettes a day).. b) I've been feeling really weird lately, my side starts to hurt out of nowhere, I get dizzy when I drive, and I can't run more than 5 minutes without my inhaler inhibitor..c) after 5 years of smoking, I am craving more cigarettes per day than ever before. Sometimes I'm in the office, I get nervous or stressed out, and there goes a cigarette.
My friend Sam is a smoker. He's been smoking since his years at UT. He's 26 now....he looks like an athlete, and can run way farther than I can. I don't get it? I thought smokers ran out of breath after 5 minutes. He says he works out, runs every other day, and plays football with his friends, yet you'll see him in the dugout during Uniballer kickball practice smoking a cig and chuggin' beer like there's no tomorrow.
Does anybody know of an authentic, more realistic way of trying to quit this habit? I've only attempted one week without smoking, and I went ballistic that week. I wanted to break shit and kill people...obviously that didn't happen.
-Do the patches work?
-Does that $120 "Chantix" pill work?
-wtf can I do?
I've inquired with people, mainly other quitters, and still NOTHING's making me quit. My grandpa's really close to dying, I heard Steve's story during crawfish about his father, and one of my closest professor's died last month due to lung cancer. Yet, none of this seems to hit home. I love smoking. I enjoy that "every-hour-buzz" feeling you get. It's like no other. Hell, it's better than the crap I used to do that landed me in jail and rehab. But damn....I think its about time I choose something else, like a gym, or a pool for exercise.
Can anybody give me any pointers? No rickrolls ass*les. I'm being way serious. I've ran out of options here. Help a TA.
dude, a month ago today i had a revelation. i was drinking, smoking and hanging out with people i barely enjoyed being around. then the morning after the events of that night, i had a revelation. i joined the navy for discepline and i was 'partying' with some people i dont even like being around that much. when i was in tx i loved everyone i hung out with, i had the perfect social life but my dayjob and schooling was whack.
reason of this story is that you, carlos, have had a revelation. you are battling something alot of people have been through and the pain your going to feel is going to be normal. my idea of pain is something you can build a tolerance for and with a high tolerance you become stronger and better than before.
Now that you had this revelation you need to find something to remind you every second of every day to show you that your ready for change. me for example, i went bald. i went bald because i wanted to show myself that im ready for my own personal revolution, and everytime i looked at the mirror i was reminded. every time i touch my head i was reminded. everytime some one that knew me that saw me and reacted in a surprised manner, it reminded me. i never forgot what i went bald for. now what you have to do is something that will remind you everyday what your fighting for. what kind of battle your going through. something that will make you show the world that you are carlos pereira in a tough moment in your life so incase your on the edge of forgetting your true friends will remind you.
small things like the bracelettes help but theyre not as effective. i felt going bald worked for me really well. maybe you should think deeply about it.
now for maintenance of that mentality your going to have to adopt a new perspective. i adopted this perspective because sean carnahan taught me it, and everything i learn from sean has always been golden. he told me you have three things to keep you at peace.
Your Mind, Body and Soul. Anything that hurts one hurts the other so, and when that happens your not in a sane state of mind.
I.e. Smoking.
Body: Physically hurts you
Mind: you know its bad for you and you have sick people to prove it to you.
Soul: everytime you smoke you think about it and you frown on the idea that your losing the battle, your lacking discepline and your feeling bad about yourself.
this is a mental and physical thing. not much difference than say... running a marathon
you gotta take it one step @a time and MICROMANAGE THE FUCK OUT OF EVERYTHING YOU FUCKEN DO. do not celebrate with a cig, dont celebrate with alcohol (impaired judgement will set you up for failure.)
take the pills, take the patch, whatever you think works. if ur gonna do any of those beleive in it and dont doubt it. just go in there with all you got and when you start craving a cig do push ups till you turn blue in the face (thats what i did when me and tiffany first broke up, it led to better habits hahaha.)
i was at a point where i was so messed up emotionally that i didnt care what people thought about me, id be in class and out of nowhere id drop and do as many push ups as i could. i got stared at alot, i had people calling me a show off, but i had a bigger problem than people making dumb harmless judgements about me.
(btw i talked to my instructor and asked him if its ok to drop and do push ups. we were goin to class from 4pm to midnight people got tired and fell asleep often to keep me awake and keep my blood flowing.)
this is a tough route to take but it works man. it freakin worked for me and i wouldnt do it any other way. but its all up to you if thats the road you wanna take, its a bit primal but a year from now youll look at yourself and youll see a stronger man, mind body and soul.
call me WHENEVER you need a purpose to keep going. (Notice the emphasis on WHENEVER.3am 3pm dont matter to me.)

If I was in your shoes I wouldn't worry so much about stopping completely. Your at a point where this wont happen because your body is just used to it. So try to take baby steps and smoke less. In the end its easier this way and you wont be fighting yourself/convincing yourself to not light one up.
Take a look at all those fatties that try those diet pills or extreme diets. Yeah they may loose weight drastically but if they get off the pill/diet they blow up again really fast. (Plus they have all that excess skin...Ewwww)
As you progress in your journey to stop smoking. Try not to put yourself in situations where you are likely to smoke. You are the only one that knows your strengths and weaknesses. In the end you'll feel better for quitting on your own free will.

Switch to mary jane for a while. It'll fill the void and it's much easier to quit.
coming from someone who used to have a 2 pack a day habit of marlboro reds back in college (smoked for 7 years before quitting) i can speak from experience.
quitting cold turkey is the best way to go. you have to WANT to quit. it might turn you into a bit of an asshole temporarily, or in my case, permanently but don't worry about it.
i would recommend the patches to people that need help.

the reason i say cold turkey works best is this... i have quit using the patch before. i didn't smoke for several years until i started dating a smoker and got back into it again. this last go around, i quit cold turkey without any help. i think that way is better because it shocks the system so much that when you finally get over your need of a cigarette, you can't even imagine wanting to smoke again. your body almost helps you reject it. that's been my experience

also, be aware that you will probably end up trading one vice for another. when i quit smoking, i end up eating a lot for the first couple months.

Yeah I quit drinking pretty much cold turkey. It helps though if you get seriously ill for a week every time you get drunk.
