Kenny Afonso - "Havaianas" Summer 08 Promo Mix

Here it is, FINALLY! I can't tell you guys enough how hard I worked on this, summing up with my unexpected perfectionism that came in the way. I never though I would finish. And it is a big step for me, finally something to share with the world, and I hope you guys will be half as satisfied after listening to it as I am with finally finishing it. Remember this is my first promo ever and not that age has much to do with it but with 17 years you don't have much experience. I tried to really bring a summer atmosphere to this and keep it fresh throughout, there is something for everyone.

enjoy!

Hey Wotyzoid, I finally got through listening to this.

Through & through this was a great mix. I loved the deep sound that stayed consistent throughout, and there was definately some classics in there that brought a smile to my face, hearing again (Specifically 'The Funk Phenomena' & 'Don't Forget About The World').

That was the first time I had heard 'Road Through The Rain', and I definately enjoyed that track (gotta love AN-2 ).

On to the technical side of things.

Your mixing is so smooth and solid. Beatmatching, volume control & eq'ing is really, really, good! Something I'm still working on myself to be more consistant in. And your trackselection was really superb.

How long have you been mixing for?

This was a very solid first mix, and I can see the hard work you've put into this has paid off.

Kudo's!

Reading this brought a smile to my face

I am really happy you enjoyed this, it kind of makes me feel accomplished. And you know I had to fit in something Daft in there, as for Road Through The Rain I heard it first on Howells's GU, great tune.

And sorry to disappoint you but this wasn't actually done on hardware as none of it is functioning right now, ALTHOUGH I don't have many doubts in my ability to actually perform this to a similar degree with a few hours of preparation beforehand (haven't touched decks since May), not claiming it to be amazing btw. My main focus for this was mainly to get a nice flow and build it in a fresh way, following my creative instinct. And not that it is much relevant now but for the curiosity I've been playing since I was 14, so that makes 3 years.

Thanks so much for listening and giving your thoughts, man. Getting feedback like this really makes those countless hours of frustration disappear.

This was another one where I thought the beginning of the mix was rock solid but the end maybe fell off a bit. I really, really enjoyed the first four tunes, and it had been ages since I heard "The Funk Phenomenon", so it was nice to get back to that one, and well in to you for picking a proper older jam to include.

I think my favorite part of the set is from Jimpsters remix of Sandy Rivera through SCSI-9 - really thought it flowed well, good selection of tunes. Once the TLBJ tune hit, though, I just felt like it got kind of disjointed for my tastes, and "Under Pressure" just left me thinking there was some more yet to come.

Anyways - all in all it's a solid mix with some pretty decent tunes selected. Keep plugging away - this mix oozes potential.

Very smooth, I thorougly enjoyed every track & transition, no complaints.

I can't come up with a review worth reading, but I'll definitely be checking your mixes in the future

Wow Rob, thanks so much for taking the time to listen. I certainly see where you're coming from, I kind of felt that it fell a little short after Mini as well. But it's awesome to see that everyone liked the starting tunes since those wore the ones I put most effort in and tried 50+ combinations before I finally got it right. Again thanks so much for taking the time, man. You're opinion is definitely an important one.

Thanks so much for listening, man. Again, the opinion of all of you matters a lot to me because I know all of you have tremendous taste in music so it really makes me feel accomplished to hear the nice feedback. Thanks again for anyone that listened and I'll will do my best to improve always.

Dude, I have no clue why I never commented on this. I remembered being pleasantly surprised by it. Just give me a chance to listen to it again and I'll give you my review

OK Kenny, I just finished listening to this on the car on the way to work. I left my wallet at home so I had to turn around to get it, so it was enough time to listen to the whole thing straight

I really liked the first 3 tracks, and your mix into "Road Through the Rain" was sex. The two tracks fit together incredibly well and you took perfect advantage of it and blended them for quite a long time. Excellent, dude. I just love it! Up until this point your mixing and programming had been great, but I think you kind of disrupted the flow you had slowly built so far with the next string of tracks. The fit very nicely with one another, but I think you dropped them a bit early. Perhaps if you had played them at the end right before "Under Pressure" they would've worked better.

This is where I feel you picked up. This whole sequence was awesome:

8. Cloud - Those Days (Jimpster's Deep Dub) [Exceptional]
9. SCSI-9 - Mini [Kompakt]
10. Terry Lee Brown Junior - Everyday (In A Deep Session With The Timewriter) [Plastic City]
11. Manuel Tur - Strayed Socks [Conya]
12. Steve Porter - Beats N' Potatoes [FDS Recordings]

Really good stuff and coincidentally, this is the kind of stuff I've been buying and playing lately.

So, to wrap it up...I really enjoyed this mix. You had some really great deep and sexy tracks that worked together very well. However, I think you could have programmed the set a bit better so the four tunes starting with "Funk Phenomena" didn't stand out that much. Your mixing was good and like I said before, your transition into "Road Through the Rain" was pure sex. This was a great mix and like Rob said, it "oozes potential". I look forward to see where you go after this. It's been quite awhile since you made this...I hope to hear another one from you soon.

Cheers!
Oscar

I'm really glad you felt the warmth.

Like I said, the next one is on the works; it's gonna be a 30-40 mins techno promo. And then I'm gonna try to do something a bit longer with lots of old school funk and deep mixed with somethings fresh.

Just listed to the whole thing from start to finish, overall it was nicely done with pretty solid mixing. I'd never considered Early Bird as an opener but it worked well. As others have commented, I thought the best mix was the
8. Cloud - Those Days (Jimpster's Deep Dub) [Exceptional]
9. SCSI-9 - Mini [Kompakt]

part.

I've always enjoyed Beat N' Potatoes as a tune to go near the start of a set but it fitted in near the end well. The only tune I didn't really get around was the one with the 'freak' vocals, but I'm fairly picky when it comes to vocals.
Good effort for a 17 year old!
