bpm change

Hi all, was just wondering if you guys change the BPM of the track much.. say you start off with 132... do you throw in tracks like 126-128 or like 135ish?.... i usually just stay btw the range of 130-134 cos i mostly blend the tracks together.. i guess i hardly do cuts.. just wanted to know how you all do it?...

i spin mostly house so i keep it 128 and sometimes move into the 130 zone, but not often

Unless you do something like a quick spin back or cut, you generally have to move in increments of a few bpm with each track toward your goal bpm. You could also use something like master tempo on cdjs which will generally hide moderate bpm changes well. But if you jump from say 128 to 135, you'll definitely notice that even with master tempo on.

all the time

my sig mix goes from 111 to 135

i just recorded another mix that goes from 122 to 136

sometimes i play as slow as 85. at house parties i will go from this slow up to 140 ish, and back down and back up again etc.

you can manipulate the bpm while playing fairly unnoticeably if you are crafy with where and how you do it. just keep playing faster tracks and working the tempo up

also you can do crafty cuts at breaks and ambient sections. i often like to mix in over breakdowns too

I stay in the 120s usually. Very rare that i go up to 130...

But when i played tribal i used to play from 130 till 138 or so.

Remember, breakdowns are your friends. If you're in a 'transition' part of your set (ie, say you're wanting to move it a step up from warm-up to a fuller sound) then I find breakdowns in a big tune can do this even better by ramping the breakdown up by a couple of BPM's.

I'll caveat it by saying it's got to be a powerful tune, it doesn't always work, and you've got to have a pretty active dance floor type (ie, they'll love it, cheer and put their hands in the air) and it doesn't really work that well on tape - but with the right tune, and the right people, jumping from 132 to 134/5 through a 16 (or better, 32) bar breakdown can jump-start/leapfrog things.

Just an opinion.

I went from 135bpm to 175bpm in a random techno/hardtechno mix I did

How do you most often change BPM? Do you adjust the pitch slowly in a breakdown, or change it abruptly between tracks?

Posted by nefardec on Aug-05-2008 17:53:

most often, abruptly in a breakdown, using some kind of effect like reverb to help

i also just change the pitch very slowly while the track is playing

sometimes i just overlap breakdowns or ambient segments and then fade

i rarely cut that sharply

i'm going to try that. sounds cool, but also sounds like it must be done is a perfect situation.

I normally tend to keep in a close range. Most of my pitch adjustments are done in the breakdown, but if it's quite a big range i'd maybe change it bit by bit throughout the whole track.

I go from about 128 to 133 and bounce around in that range to keep momentum going in my mixes. Then I go up to the 140s to finish off with some uplifting trance.

All so true, you almost have to change your bpm throughout your set. I usually move from about 130-135 and try when i can to hide the pitch shift with effects, or during a break, it is true that even with master key on, you can still notice a difference, especially if you're moving up or down 3-4 bpm
