fire

so i'm an idiot and started a fire in my apartment last night and everything smells like fire/smoke. any ideas on the best way to rid an apartment of that smokey smell quickly?

throw it all away. You'll never get rid of it fully. Or move apartment.

i can't threw everything away...isn't there a way for it to just go away?

fix fire with fire. Do it. The flames are tantalizingly sensual, aren't they? The way they dance about erasing all the bad and replacing it with black. Only black. Black and the forgotten.

you can hire a steam cleaning firm, they do a good job but even then it isn't guaranteed that it will leave. It is a very pungent odor and you might be stuck with it. It will never just go away as it is not like liquid (piss ect) that dries and is cleaned. Smoke and burning really penetrates and sticks around.

insurance?

it depends what has been burnt, because once it becomes toast, it can't become bread again as someone once said. The smell will remain on anything that got turned into ashes, u can mask it a bit with air fresheners & shit like that, but I don't think it'll cover it up much at all. It's such a distinct smell and strong, i'd say you'd be lucky to get rid of it.

nothing burned with the exception of two pots that are in the trash. everything just smells like smoke.

good call on the insurance i have that but totally forgot

right. don't use insurance for that. I thought u meant maybe the carpet/flooring/more substantial damage. Open the window, get some air freshener (maybe a plug in one) and scrub the area down around it. good cleaning agents like cif also have a nice fragrance which will mask smells a bit. I was thinking more along the 'bigger' scale of things, which would obviously be worth the insurance help, but for what your premium would go up for claiming (well going by uk standards anyway) it wouldn't be worth it!

steam cleaning might work...either way my roommate is not gonna be happy when he gets back.

you just to air that shit out.. i remember when we had a fire in our laundry room, the firemen people just opened all windows and doors and hooked up this huge ass fucking sucking fan that sucked out all smoke..

Ahhh, brings me back to my student days when I was but a drunken 17 year old . I did something similar back then, except I put vegetable oil in while I was grilling some burgers ... which I'm HOPING you didn't do.

I agree with Alfi, just open all available windows, doors and let all the smoke drift out.

spray tomato juice over every thing that smells and let sit for 45 min. just like when one gets sprayed by a skunk.

unfortunately just a tired old 27 year old...anyhow windows open. went home for lunch the smell was getting better and leaving the office now. let's hope it's slightly better than at lunch.

Tired and Old my ass, going by your exercise regimes.

You may still need to toss some stuff out but this works great. Used to use it in smokers cars when I detailed .
