Speakers..what to get????

So i finally bit the bullet and bought two Pio cdj200's and a DXM 06 mixer.

However, now i need something to play em through. Im currently using my computer speakers which are fairly decent, but Im looking for a proper setup that I can use for my own listening, and to play small house parties. (ie. enough power to fill a 20' x 20' room)

My budget is limited ( up to 600$).

Could someone point me in the right direction? Should i get a home theater in a box? an amp + two speakers? two powered speakers?

I've heard good things about the Behringer Truth B2030A, Alesis M1, and M-Audio monitors. From my quick look, if you want to buy something that will fill a room, the M Audio Ex66 look good. The MTM design provides a decent punch.
OR, if you really want to have something solid, build your own. This requires a lot of time, but if you have the tools and such, it's very possible. I built these from a guy's website:

love my m-audio bx8a's, clear with awesome bass, no need for an amp, and can get very loud. always have served me well at house parties. and you can add on a powdered sub (bx10s) later on if you need even more bass

Since you only have $600, and you want to use them for house parties too, than why not get the MACKIE SRM-350 Speaker? Guitar Center has them on clearance for $299!!!!! THAT FREAKIN' CHEAP!!!

Ive heard alot about the KRK's and, i like the way they look.

For building my own speakers... I have a pile of old speakers that would be perfect for a rebuild. Generally speaking, how much does it cost to build your own set of speakers? and how does it compare to a prebuilt set?

Sounds like a great deal, is anyone using these, or has anyone used these in comparison to other PA speakers.

looks like a even better deal than the behringers i found. mackie is awesome (only 10inch bass tho)

We just used my Cerwin Vega RE-30's for a house party, and they POUND. Got them for $180, reciever for $30. You'd never need anything louder in a house.

when looking closer the bassdriver does look abit cheap, it does have foam-surrounding which is often used a cheap drivers and in general NOT in PA. The bass REALY reminds me of some Yamahas we had at school many years ago which was the suck for correct bass. this is just assumptions tho

I'm using some TR8's right now, actually. I can't comment on the quality of the low end, but it has it, and that's what's gonna matter. I used a pair of TR6's to watch a movie tonight. REALLY good for that, honestly.

Try 'em out... if not... I second epdarks' Craigslist recommendation.

I love my Truth monitors and I'm wondering how their PAs are.

I believe the speakers that I built ran about 500-600 bucks after upgrades and such. They definitely sound better than any loudspeaker for under $2000 USD each that I've heard. Mine lack a bit in the bass in a large room, but they are very clear and do wonders in a small room.


The advantage of building your own is that you can make the speakers however you want (with enough research, of course). Want it loud? Look into a high efficiency speaker. Full rage drivers give a very smooth sound, and you can't really go wrong with the Fostex drivers. If you choose to go the route of the crossover, keep in mind that each resister you put in will decrease your overall "volume." Yes, speaker building does require a bit of knowledge in physics, as well as electrical engineering, but the final results are very satisfying. PM me if you are interested, and I can show you a couple good websites to get you started.

could u post a pic of your homebuild speaker? its always nice to see others projects.

I just played on a pair of SRM-450's last night. No sub, unfortunately, but they did alright by themselves. MORE than enough for a 20'x20' room.

I have a pair of SRM350s and I have a client that wants me to do a gig for 300 people. The SRM350 manual says that these monitors are good for 200 people. So is it 200 people per monitor?

What really matters is the size of the room and how far away the people are from the speaker. I mean... 200 people packed in a room VS 200 people spread out in a stadium.... I know these are extreme examples, but they illustrate my point. Just make sure you get 'em a bit over people's heads. If you don't think they'll cut it, you might consider renting additional gear?

Would a sub make a difference? The place is the size of a gym. Blah I want to save as much money as possible on gear since I already have monitors.

A sub can help if it has a highpass output on the sub to alleviate some of the work the PAs are doing. Gym eh? Sounds big. Do you have a chance to try out your gear before the event? It'll only take you a few minutes to determine whether what you have is good enough. If it isn't I'd consider renting additional PAs before a sub and throwing it on your bill.

Are you throwing down background music or is this for a dance?
