Love Poundin' Sensation Mixxx 1.6.0 Released (free open source dj software)

Hey guys,

I work on this open source project called Mixxx. It's Free software
(licensed under the GPL) and is a lot of fun. (a "by DJs for DJs" kind
of thing) It's also cross-platform: Linux, Mac, and Windows are supported.

Today we just released a major new version. If you ever tried 1.5.0
and thought it was missing something, then 1.6.0 might have what you
were looking for.

It supports Serato, Traktor Scratch and FinalScratch vinyl control
timecoded cd's and vinyl records, and it supports a whole slew of MIDI
input devices. Also, if you don't have a fancy multiple-input
multiple-output soundcard, you can just use two soundcards, one for
output and one for cueing.

Anyway, check it out! http://www.mixxx.org

If you do, please let us know what you like and what you don't
like. We're always looking for suggestions. If you have problems you
can try our mailing list, our IRC channel, or our bugtracker.

Also, if you know C++ and want to join in on the fun, it's a
completely open development process -- anyone can join us.

Cheers,
RJ

PS: There are youtube videos of people using it:

Let me get this strait... all I need are 2 Serato vinyls, and external sound card, and a mixer? Sure beats paying $500 for Serato.

Well, you need two turntables to play the vinyls on, but basically yea.

You hook the turntables up to the inputs of your soundcards (you need
2 inputs). You don't even need a mixer because the mixing is done
in Mixxx. There's a way you can set it up to use an external mixer
though, so if you still want to use your mixer you can.

Also, here's a list of the hardware we're currently compatible with.

mixxx wiki: hardware compatibility

Adding hardware support for MIDI devices is usually just as simple as
figuring out which MIDI signals go to which button on the device. We
don't own many devices and we don't do this for money at all so it's
hard to add more . We have a 'MIDI Learn' feature coming very soon, so this will become even less of a problem soon.

You can do auto-BPM matching with it, but there isn't anything that
will automatically DJ for you. This is meant to help a DJ do
beatmatching/mixing.

You can record your mixes to file, so you can definitely make a
mixtape offline.

RJ

You guys should enable paypal donations/amazon, or just general donations. I'm going to try this when I get home.

Holy shit. Will definitely look into this.

Only thing that makes me nervous so far is playing out at gigs... since this isn't a "tried and true" solution like Serato or TS.

Awesome!

I'm going to bung this on my laptop and see how it goes in comparison to Ableton.

I don't use many fancy loops or effects, so a simple digital beatmatching program could be just the ticket for me.

hot damn

does it have keylock?

also, do you have a diagram of how this thing hooks up?

like this:

Posted by elFreak on Aug-08-2008 00:57:

will give this a try

Posted by nefardec on Aug-08-2008 01:01:

also,

if you've figured out how to decode these timecodes - do you know how to make a wav file that is equivalent that I can burn to cd and use without buying proprietary cds?

Posted by Konix on Aug-08-2008 01:40:

Serato's CD control signal can be freely downloaded from Rane's website. Just download, unzip, and burn the wav file with your preferred burning program.

Posted by stan229 on Aug-08-2008 01:42:

For torq I've made clone cd images which do raw one to one copies

http://www.rane.com/scratchlivecontrol.zip

"Scratchlivecontrol.zip requires an unzip utility to open, and includes two files. Scratchlivecontrol.wav is a stereo 44.1 file that you can drop into any burner application -- however, the track select portion at the end of the audio file reqires a special start time on a second track to function correctly. If you have Sony CD Architect, you can load the scratchlivecontrol.cdp file and it will incorporate the correct second track timing. When using any other application, do not adjust the levels, make sure no auto-levelling is turned on, don't downsample or try another format, or the control signal won't function."

this program seems to be "sik" as it were.

Pretty sure you can if I read the documentation correctly. Going to grab the Serato CD image and try this one of these days when I'm over at a friends place who has CDJs.
