Old house records.

Seems everyone is doing it these days.

Is it a reflection on current music or is it just another one of those crazy dance music trends.

I also notice a lot of new records coming out have a distinct mid to late 90's feel to them. Percussion, repetitive vocal, typical house groove etc etc. I like it if it's done well such as boris werners new release, however is this the shape of things to come over the next year or so...

examples?

I'm just buying old house/detroit techno reissues/represses... dunno what anyone else is doing.

I'm all about resurrections if they're good.

this release is one of the best records i have bought all year...assuming you are talking about his double ep.

i love listening to old house records.

people should just find good stuff by digging deeper. not producing samey stuff.

yea, re-issues i guess.. as said above, greatness.

I definitely see it happening more and more and I really enjoy it. Nice to know that people are going back to the roots of dance music and still keep it fresh by employing the old sounds with a fresh soul. Good music shouldn't have an expiration date, it's just good music.

It's really not that weird to me though, I always love playing older stuff...and you'd be surprised at how much of it still sounds relatively new.

Posted by nefardec on Aug-07-2008 23:37:

I think people have always been doing this?

I mean most people play the obvious classics, but I don't see many people playing roger s white labels from 91 in their sets except those who have always done so

i think in general there is a very retro house trend right now

Indeed, and with people like Guillaume, The Mole, etc putting out new takes on it you can drop it in sets without it sounding out of place.

"DJ F.E.X. - Just Dance" comes to mind.

i really like that so many people are coming to appreciate older stuff. i know a long time ago i didn't, but again once your taste kind of matures anything with a good beat just works. it might be a trend now or whatever, but i really think good music will always remain current no matter how old it is.

Adultnapper puts it quite eloquently:

quote:
I don't think it's recycled. Everything goes in cycles. I think what minimal did is that it innovated some of the production techniques and gave a new breath to it and those new techniques are going to be integrated into old forms. I mean, you're not going to kill a groove. I don't care what you say. A great groove is a great groove and you'll be able to listen to it 150 years from now and it's still going to be a great groove. And that's what house music is about. Techno has always been about innovating, innovating new production techniques and using new technologies, which is awesome and great. It's always informed house musicand made it something new. It's all part of this energy. I don't think it's going to be house and minimal is going to die, it just constantly moves and grows. And I hope I do too.

I think he may be an anarchist...or a Communist. Definitely one of the two

I think the word you're looking for is "hippie."

Seriously though, he's some kind of reformed NYC punk rocker. I'm pretty sure someone just fed him a pill and he just went "OMG, laike - colors taste better!"

And then we're where we are now

Posted by Clovis on Aug-08-2008 17:17:

He's from Michigan. It was a good interview.

I like how likes slower music like me lol. He says he saw Hawtin banging it out in the late 90's and had to leave.

There are soooo many good old tracks out there, and I'm glad to see the trend is going this way as well. Leave your Macbook with Ableton at home, and bring some records back to the club.

People can play old records off macbooks.

such is the trend, though I say if your going retro, go all the way retro and slam some vinyl down on the Technics. Of course the big names won't be doing that anymore Old house vinyl can be bought for pennies at times and from retiring DJs' collections for excellent bargains. Craig's List and Ebay is your friend.
