Vocoder - Reason - completely stumped... any help?

Ok, I'm am completely stumped. I've done everything I know to do and am ready to post what is probably going to be a dumb ass question... but it's a last resort - I'm stuck.

I'm using my vocoder in Reason. Technically, I'm not. It's not working. I've hooked this up before a dozen times but for some reason I can't get this work right tonight.

Below are screen shots of my wiring. When I move the vocoder from entirely wet to dry I hear the voice from the sampler. When I switch back, nothing - not when I assign the controller to the synth nor to the sampler. I've even checked a few tutorials to double check wiring and everything... nothing - I tried changing the patch on the Malstrom, tried using Thor, made sure I wasn't using a sine, please help. I'm wasting an entire evening in the studio with this.

Everything looks like it should be working. I can have a look at the .rns file if you don't mind sending it.

Just pm'd you the links. Any help appreciated!

I got it working. I think the problem was that you just didn't have any notes written down for the sampler to play.

Here's the modified .rns file:

Do you know how to use the CV from the vocoder as effects controllers?

I can twist shit inside out with the vocoder I could send you an example if you like.

Thanks for checking this out. You're right, writing the notes in seems to have it up and running. Half my headache is gone already.

One question though - when I've set this up in the past I've been able to just play the notes from my controller to initiate the sampler - I shouldn't have to draw them in there, should I?

Again - really appreciate the help!

Remember the Carrier signal malstrom needs to be triggered as well as the sampler. Write a chord seq in malstrom and then trigger the sampler and run it

^ Sonic_c has it right.

Yes, the vocoder needs an input from your NN19 or whatever, but also needs a carrier (ie notes on the vocoders channel - usually a chord) for it to work. Without any carrier you will have no sound.

I love using Reason's vocoder as an EQ. You can get some really great sounds by making some radical cuts or boosts and then running the result through a distortion unit.

Does anyone use it as an effects controller?

I learned this uncommon use from a friend its a bit complex for someone new to reason. I might post a picture tutorial or I will make a combinator and post a link.

+1 me to.

Ok i posted a combinator that is not utilising the vocoder but still gives a good demonstration of how fx can be combined to completely change a loop using control voltages to automate the parameters etc. I will do full on reason FX tutorial over this weekend

Thanks all - appreciate the help.

I'm still puzzled a bit... I could've sworn that in the past I never had to write notes the Malstrom in order for it to work when I trigger the sample. I went an reread the tutorial I first used when I set up the vocoder and no reference to it either. I'm not sure... whatever, though, it works now. I'll keep a chord in the Reason sequencer (I'll end up using it in rewire mode though, so not sure how that'll work) and use it that way.

Thanks.

You can always send midi from the host sequencer to Reason (rather than keeping a chord in the Reason sequencer) if you don't want to bother with going back and forth between the arrange windows.

Or just hook a matrix up to malstrom draw a solid pattern and leave it set to run everytime u play the song. Note wont change though
