Any tips for free HTML compilers?
Anybody know where I'd be able to download a free, spyware safe, and reliable HTML compiler?
Your input and suggestions are much appreciated, thanks!!

I learned html using this one C:/WINDOWS/system32/notepad.exe
It was the only web page coding program I knew when I was promoted to a web content producer at HP, I kid you not.
I worked using Dreamweaver for a couple of years before I moved on to my current job.

I've had them for a while now... The very first webpage I built was a frames one, now I have a double-frame one that I want to upload.
lol before you get flamed some more, ima actually help you out: your browser is your HTML "compiler". Write some HTML in notepad, save the file as *.html, and open it through your browser. Ta-da!
funny thread nonetheless
this thread makes my head hurt. Since when do you "compile" HTML?
WordPress.
autoexec.bat is a good one too

Nice.
HTML isn't compiled. It's not even a programming language. It's a markup language. I can't even begin to understand what you mean by "compiler" and would imagine that few if any others here can either, which is why we haven't given you any recommendations.
It sounds like maybe you're talking about a graphical editor like Dreamweaver... or maybe this is ASP.NET, but I doubt it, seeing as how there's only one ASP.NET compiler and it's part of the framework. But none of those things make any sense when stacked against the other thing you said ("you have to upload it already processed, otherwise it will just display the text instead of the page"... what??).
P.S. You're moving from frames to "double" frames? I think I'm gonna be sick...
Anybody that uses frames and doesn't live in 1997 or use Netscape deserves to be shot in the fucking face
If you can't use notepad, try using TEXTPAD
| quote: |
| general purpose editor for plain text files. Easy to use, with all the features a power user requires. TextPad is designed to provide the power and functionality to satisfy the most demanding text editing requirements. It can edit files up to the limits of virtual memory, and it will work with the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 2000, Server 2003, XP and Vista. TextPad has been implemented according to the Windows XP user interface guidelines, so great attention has been paid to making it easy for both beginners and experienced users. In-context help is available for all commands, and in-context menus pop-up with the right mouse button. The Windows multiple document interface allows multiple files to be edited simultaneously, with up to 2 views on each file. Text can be dragged and dropped between files. In addition to the usual cut and paste capabilities, you can correct the most common typing errors with commands to change case, and transpose words, characters and lines. Other commands let you indent blocks of text, split or join lines, and insert whole files. Any change can be undone or redone, right back to the first one made. Visible bookmarks can be put on lines, and edit commands can be applied to lines with bookmarks. Frequently used combinations of commands can be saved as keystroke macros, and the spelling checker has dictionaries for 10 languages. It also has a customizable tools menu, and integral file compare and search commands, with hypertext jumps from the matched text to the corresponding line in the source file (ideal for integrating compilers). ![]() |
i loved frames when i first made pages...now the thought of even browsing a site with frames makes me cringe
lol @ people flipping out on use of the word 'compiled', so the fuck what if they never took comp sci class and used the wrong term, you know what the OP meant.
although it's not free i'd recommend dreamweaver, it's great for putting the basics together/making sure all your tags are in order.. then do the rest in notepad
Holy shit, she just came in here to ask for help.
Kamka, PM me, and I'll be more than happy to explain some of the basics of HTML and why the context of compiling doesn't really apply at all here.
Also, I suggest for a text editor to try downloading EditPlus. It will give you a nice look with colour coded HTML tags.
If you are using a Mac, try out Textmate

I was under the impression opening this thread that I missed the boat somewhere because I have never heard of a html compiler.

And then you recommend to use Notepad afterwards... haha, jesus, are people still able to work without syntax highlighting or even proper tab handling? Doing projects in Notepad doesn't make you some l33t h@x0r ninja, it makes you a luddite with too much time on your hands. |
I guess I might have made a mistake by confusing the term "HTML editor" with "HTML compiler", but then again, I didn't realize that people would be so nit-picky. In any case, I knew precisely what I had in mind, it's just that I was writing the first post late at night, so I guess I didn't expend as much energy as I should've to ensure that the post was all technically precise.
Thanks to all those who offered me help anyways... zokissima, you have a PM in the mail
And just to clarify, I know that you can write HTML coding and then upload it via File Transfer to the web-host provider, but: 1. for me that didn't work previously, as I already mentioned, and 2. that procedure is rather time consuming if you are working on the web-page in a "trial-and-error" fashion, fixing up the code here and there and then reviewing the page to see how it looks. I know that I'm a n00b and not an expert in web-page design (not by a long shot), but I though that this was about something else rather than proving who's the best and who's a dummie?
