The Good Old Britpop Debate

Who was better?

Oasis

or Blur

Posted by magikb on Aug-09-2008 14:34:

I'm surprised Liam isn't in this thread yet!

I listened to them both. They both have catchy tunes, but I probably listened to Oasis more.

Who I liked better, probably neither.

The Verve > Oasis > Blur

Posted by LKD on Aug-09-2008 15:06:

in terms of ow they were, at the time blur was a bigger band but in the long run, oasis made more memorable stuff than blur...

but to answer the basic question, fuck..of course im gonna say oasis

Posted by Silky Johnson on Aug-09-2008 15:07:

I liked Blur better, but I think Oasis is the better band.

Yeah. Musically I find Oasis to be better.

Much as I thought Blur was great, I was always a much bigger fan of Oasis.

Posted by nadezhda on Aug-09-2008 15:14:

i think blur are 10x better. oasis put out one good album (definitely maybe) and then everything after that sounded exactly the same. even noel himself said that their third album was shit cos they were doing too many drugs. blur kept reinventing themselves from shoegaze to brit pop to lo-fi. their music is a lot more interesting.

re: the verve:
the verve pre-Urban Hymns are the greatest band ever, but they weren't brit pop. Urban Hymns was basically an ashcroft solo album and a pop record. yes, their most popular, but the weakest cos nick mccabe took a backseat to the songwriting process. listen to anything put out before then and they sounded completely different and much more interesting. at least their new album hearkens back to a bit of the early verve, and isn't urban hymns part 2.

noel on other projects:

Ian Brown & Noel - Keep What you got (originally Teotihuacan by Noel, featured in the first X files movie soundtrack)

Chemical Brothers - Setting sun (Noel gallagher's unreleased track released by the chemies with an electronic spin)

Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be (same...taking noel's unreleased track and making something of it)

Prodigy - Shoot Down (Liam on Vocals, Noel on guitar)

this was the original unreleased versin of shoot down:

I prefer The Smiths or Gene to either Blur or Oasis.

I wasn't a HUGE fan of either. But I would say that I liked more Oasis songs than Blur.

agreed, close call though with Oasis (although I think the bros. are nuts). Bitter Sweet Symphony and Lucky Man are incredible. Wonderwall is my fave Oasis tune.

Verve's more psychedelic, pre Urban Hymns stuff is good too. I got to hear them live @ Molson Park in, um, 1994, I think. LOL!

Damon Albarn is the one of the greatest musical minds of the past century.

Yep I said it.

The range, depth, and constant change to be experienced when listening to his music cannot be compared to many on the planet today.

The List:
Blur (specifically 13 & Think Tank)
Gorillaz (not bad for a side project) and moderate participation in the Deltron 3030 project that preceded it.
Mali Music (truly unique... but not many dig the central African sounds, so perhaps only check this out if you dig the sounds of Manu Chao &/or Amadou et Mariam)

Check some of that out and perhaps you'll better understand my affinity for my choice here.

For that reason, I chose Blur.

I've seen them both live, own all their albums, and that's my take.

Cheers!

ummm as of Saturday Noel Gallagher has officially left the group. It's not like any of the others can compose anything worthwhile. My fav band is now no more.

quote:
29/08/09

Dearly beloved, it is with a heavy heart and a sad face that I say this to you this morning.

As of last Friday the 28th August, I have been forced to leave the Manchester rock'n'roll pop group Oasis.

The details are not important and of too great a number to list. But I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.

I would like firstly to offer my apologies to them kids in Paris who'd paid money and waited all day to see us only to be let down AGAIN by the band. Apologies are probably not enough, I know, but I'm afraid it's all I've got.

While I'm on the subject, I'd like to say to the good people of V Festival that experienced the same thing. Again, I can only apologise - although I don't know why, it was nothing to do with me. I was match fit and ready to be brilliant. Alas, other people in the group weren't up to it.

In closing I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I'll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have a family and a football team to indulge.

I'll see you somewhere down the road. It's been a fuckin' pleasure.

Thanks very much.

Goodbye.

NG.

Radiohead started out in 1985 and were arguably at their peak in the mid 90's
Coldplay released Yellow in the UK in 1999
