Weird way of getting a job

Even though I decided to focus on my studies rather than on a better job, a friend of mine convinced me that it would be a nice idea to apply for a position in the company he works for. At first, I'd help students interpret texts in foreign languages (such as English and Spanish), but he says I can ascend quickly as long as I do my job right. Because my current job is not going to take me anywhere, I decided to give it a try.

The manager liked me quite a lot, and I found out he too is a graduate student in linguistics. But, when the owner of the (small) company interviewed me, he talked me out of it, saying that I should focus on something related to my major (Japanese) and that I was over-qualified for the task.

Last week, my friend told me that, if I wanted the job, I should go there and talk to the owner once more. Being somewhat disillusioned by what happened, I decided not to go: maybe the owner was right, after all, and I should look for something that "made sense" in my curriculum.

Today, however, I found out that I got the job even though I didn't show up for the next step. I don't know whether I should be happy or not. Yay, I guess

there's nothing wrong with being over qualified.

I used to think so, but being over qualified can cause unnecessary drama and whatnot, as far as I've been told, and an over qualified employee can easily be hired by a rival company for a better job, putting weeks of training to waste.

I too thought there was no problem, but after I started thinking as an entrepreneur, it made sense.

im not talking from the boss' standpoint, fuck them. there's nothing wrong with taking a position that youre over-qualified for, and bide your time until something better comes along.

looking at the bigger picture trumps any low paying job. It's called putting in your time, something you young skallawags know nothing about! Look where you want to be in a year, if that place is with that company then show up to the first day of work

oh and to play along..

what were you thinking
