What is the deal with the recording volume of all the tracks?

There are some brilliant ones, but they are all recorded so soft, they wouldn't really sound right in a mix with other tracks, it's really annoying

Pretty much any of them.

Turn Off The Lights peaks at around -5db, where as most tracks are at the 0db limit.

I'll try bumping the volume, but raising the volume by around 70% will also raise any background hiss and such that there might be, which is my concern.

In any decently mixed track, background hiss should be really minimal even if it peaks at -5dB.
