Why is it that...

when someone mentions OCD that people automatically assume they are clean freaks?

This was sparked when I was waiting for the office to get opened this morning, and someone passing was talking to a coworker and he called her OCD. Her first reaction was, "How am I ocd? Have you seen my desk?!"

Because OCD people are often compelled to be neat/clean/organisation freaks.

While I would be quick to agree, there are a ton of other ticks that these OCD freaks perform. Why is this one the most predominant one that people cling to?

Probably because it's the most predominant one.

i'm convinced i have some mild form of it and i'm not really a neat freak in the least bit. i mean, my place is pretty clean for the most part but i'm not one of those, "OMG! DISHES IN THE SINK OMGOMG" lol

i'm kind of secretly neurotic about really small things like papers in envelopes being perfectly lined up before i put them in... and my guy has 2 tables that go together as one for a coffee table and his roommate pointed out to me the other day that i always make them perfectly aligned together if i see that they aren't when i go over there lol. so just stupid stuff like that i'm ocd about.

oh and when i was little i was really nuts about not steping on cracks or stepping in the exact center of a tile repeatedly when i walked. i dont do that any more though.

i dont even know if that's real OCD but it seems like it to me.

omg u just reminded me of a funny erowid story i read a long time ago about a guy who had a difficult experience with 2pcp or di 028rlxjgfkja lol one of those fucking weird acidy-lab drugs and he was spitting on his own walls and his friend was like, "DUDE! stop spitting on the walls" so he spit on the floor and was like, "what? i spit on the floor" and then he picked up a spoon and put it in his mouth and attempted to light it and smoke it

Does it affect your life? Or the life of those around you?

no i'm too headstrong for that.

my cousin's wife is a chemist and she is really bad. it totally affects her life and her kids' lives, etc... she would bring blankets to their own grandmother's house for them to sit on and weird shit like that. she's crazy.

The typical OCD sufferer performs tasks (or compulsions) to seek relief from obsession-related anxiety. To others, these tasks may appear odd and unnecessary. But for the sufferer, such tasks can feel critically important, and must be performed in particular ways to ward off dire consequences and to stop the stress from building up. Examples of these tasks are repeatedly checking that one's parked car has been locked before leaving it, turning lights on and off a set number of times before exiting a room, repeatedly washing hands at regular intervals throughout the day, touching objects a certain amount of times before leaving a room, or walking in a certain routine way. Physical symptoms may include those brought on from anxeties and unwanted thoughts, as well as tics or Parkinson's disease-like symptoms: rigidity, tremor, jerking arm movements, or involuntary movements of the limbs.

i dunno dude. before i left my apt this morning i checked 3 times in a matter of about 10 minutes to make sure i had unplugged my iron. lol it's like i knew i did, but i wanted to make sure again. and i also have a phsyical, sometimes uncontrollable "tick". i twitch/roll my nose a lot.

Then you must not know cat lovers. They seem to consistently have dirty ass cars and homes. By no means are ALL that way, but a lot sure as hell are.

I already knew this, but was seeking other points of view in an attempt to broaden my views on this subject.

Why is it stupid? If anything, you coming into a thread just to say that is stupid.

Posted by Slylee on Aug-14-2008 03:34:

yea dude im seriously considering getting rid of my cat but i dunno i think i would be really hard on myself if i did. i can't fucking deal w/ the cat hair it drives me mad. i'm constantly swiffering and using a lint thingy on my couch, bed, clothes, etc...

and she is really hyper and nocturnal and wakes me up all the time i could strangle her sometimes.

...because it's like saying:

"Why is it that when people do something crazy, others always call them schizophrenic, even though the symptoms could be quite different to the actual disease?"

or

"Why is it that people say it's raining cats and dogs when it's actually raining water?"

You're being overly literal and it's a fucking stupid question.

I have quite a few OCD tendencies. My girlfriend and I had a discussion about this the other day actually; I'd mentioned that I used to do a lot of weird stuff when I was a kid and that I rarely exhibited any tendencies now, but for the rest of the day following that conversation I noticed just how many subtle things I did.

Kinda weird.
