lotto: the atheist's religion

"hope is the denial of reality"

to me, this basically means that you should base your decisions in life on the best available information at the time, and not be dissuaded/propelled into action and/or belief by unsubstantiated nonsense, false hope, or dreams not based somewhere in cold, hard, real life.

So why do I feel compelled to waste my cold hard cash each week on 1:2,000,000 (or more) odds?

Anyone else gambling on stupid odds? (and no, I don't mean jennypie taking cock in her grungel from 50 blokes without a condom).

Gambling on stupid odds is fun as long as you're being entertained by a cheap thrill.

I buy the occasional scratch off ticket and play craps because I find it fun.

I thought this was gonna be another thread for geeks to argue on the internet about religion.

i play occasionally. simple entertainment.

Yeah, I buy scratch-its sometimes. Never really win much. $50 here and there.

Those are the odds of winning a big lot, but some people don't really care about that. If you play regularly you actually do end up winning a lot of smaller lots (20, 50, etc). I know people who play lottery and actually have slightly positive profit margins from it. Personally I just hate the idea of introducing luck to any aspect of my life when I can do without it.

yeah, but i dont compete to place. i play to win if i wanted to win tiny amounts of money that i earn in an hour or so at work, id play roulette.

i hate working and i wanna win the lottery dammit!

There are two choices. Believe in an intelligent creator, or not. Both decisions rely on faith. Atheists can not prove god does not exist, which would be a logical fallacy anyways. Theists can not prove god does exist. Both axioms rely on faith to build their syllogisms. So an atheist is no different than a theist in their reliance on faith.

Most atheists, I assume, would base their beliefs around science. Science at least makes a continuing attempt to understand the unknown elements of the physical world, rather than simply assigning any 'unknowns' to being a product of some invisible and intangible deity.

IMO

There was a professor in my chem department who had to pay taxes every year on the earning he pulled in off of scratch offs. He had some sort of system down that worked because the last year I heard about it he pulled in over 30,000 from scratch offs and it was only about September so he had a few more months.

Personally I'd play the big lotto here, but I already pay taxes. Property taxes on the house alone are in excess of $8000 so fuck em if they think they're getting anymore.
