Good Fantasy Series Novels

I can name a million! Hahaha <3

This is by and far my favourite genre of novel. Absolutely -love- it! So fascinated by fantasy novels in general. Love magic and tales in �olden times�

As I come across new series or start reading new fantasy books, I'm going to list them here�

Anyone else can do the like as well, with any novels they are particularly loving presently, or have in the past; any novels they'd strongly recommend to others who love this genre as much as myself.



Right now, just picked up "NATURAL ORDERMAGE" by J.E. Modesitt, Jr.

First time reading any fantasy works by this author, and though I'm naught but 30 pages in, I can already tell I'm positively going to love reading this collection of series. There are already 15 books out dealing w/ this particular universe. Usually 2 or 3 books run together (form an independent series from the others out) and are about the same cast of characters at the same point in time in this world. So, though this is the 14th book put out in "The Sage of Recluse" universe, one need not have read the ones before it, bc those involved different unrelated characters and were at a different time altogether in the overall timeline.

Anyways, in these books you have "order" magic and "chaos" magic. Every mage is one or the other, a "black" mage (ie. ordermage) or a "white" mage (ie. choasmage)).

Love the concept and the different way this author has decided to deal w/ magic. Pretty fresh and very interesting. Lots of cool possibilities I think! That�s the main reason im so eager to devour through these novels and see how it all gets fleshed!!

I"ve read the "wheel of time" by robert jordan. They're about ten or eleven, I thought they were well done. I recommend them a try.

Love Dragonlance. Waiting on the release of the 3rd filler book between the original 3.

Another fav of mine is the Band Of Four Quartet by Ed Greenwood. I usually hate D&D fast-paced books but this particular series actually has great character development.

And lastly, Elizabeth Hayden's Symphony of Ages series is a good one.

I'm currently reading a book called Thunderer, which is pretty good considering I loathe most urban fantasy novels.

Would love some suggestions as well. Awesome thread Jems!

The 11th book: "KNIFE OF DREAMS" has been out in paperback for a couple years.

I still need to read it; have it sitting on the desk in front of me, but as of yet havent found the time to get to it for all the other series I'm really enjoying right now.

Jordan is (was) widely considered in the genre to have been the next Tolkien... the Tolkien of the 90s and 2000s.

Shame about his death Truly a tragic, epic loss.

He had the 12th and FINAL book 1/2 done before he passed away, and he had -detailed- and extensive notes written about exactly how he wanted the remainder of his book in his legendary series to unfold. He also dictated in his final days the same, his thoughts on everything that he wanted to fold, and how exactly such things -should- unfold.

His son (I believe) is carrying on and finishing the last book!

I cannot wait till it makes the shelves!!

This series is a MUST read for all who love the genre!




(More to come in later post about MY favourite fantasy series which, in my opinion, is the best one ever written. The author and the series is considered to be right up there alongside Jordan's work. It it another token and massive series in the genre that all should read as well.

The 'sword of truth' series was pretty good as well, at least the first few that I read. It has a few very close parallels with the wheel of time series which can be a bit off-putting, but I enjoyed it.

My FAVOURITE EVER, bar none, HANDS DOWN!!! NOTHING touches that series. I'm still saddened at its end w/ the last book back in the fall...

And I hope you arent implying that the parallels are likely a case of the author, Terry Goodkind, "copying" (so to speak) Robert Jordan's ideas.

Both series essentially ran parallel to each, coming out at the same time. Wheel of Time may have put out its first book a year or two sooner, but it certainly wasnt a case of Sword of Truth mirroring everything or anything from Wheel of Time.

Didn't mean to imply that one was copying the other, I think I would have felt the same about each series regardless of who started first. I happened to read the wheel of time books first is all. I think I actually like the sword of truth ones a little better.. This thread is probably going to inspire me to pick up the series again :P

I think the biggest thing that drew me into each series is that the protagonist is really discovering the world at the same pace that the reader does. It makes me fit into the character's shoes that way. Anyone know any other books or series that develop like this? American Gods was similar this way, though the the story, plot and setting are all very different.

after a year of trying, lowell finally convinced me to read this series. i'm on the third book now. it hooked me like crack, although sometimes i feel like it's braincandy, and goodkind's repetitive narratives totally irk me. i'm reading till faith of the fallen at least though.

actually, i wanted to ask you if you knew of any really well written vampire series. i've always wanted to read one so i might try after the SoT series. any suggestions?

The Belgariad Series by David Eddings

This series owned my childhood. Not as epic and grandeur as LOTR, but addicting and fun to read.

So many classics in this thread already.

Just going to recommend another series that I've fallen in love with. George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice.

First book is called Game of Thrones, and there are currently 4 books in the series (ending at 7). If you like high fantasy with real-world politics and a very grey-scale cast of characters (no one is black and white) then pick this up now!

One of my recent favorites is.....

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher



I read these for the first time back in 2002 and could not stop reading them to save my life. Went through all of them in a weekend - the story centers around a gangly, mouthy, sarcastic, hopeful hero of a professional wizard living in modern day Chicago. He has a talking horn-ball of a skull named Bob for company along with a battered VW Beetle of assorted colors and a policewoman who is half his size but yet kicks his ass regularly. It's funny, it's different and the stories are well written and told. The next one due out, #11, is in October.

The Belgariad was the first fantasy series I ever read and is also a top favorite of mine.
