How do you record your sets?

I want to know how you guys are recording your sets. I'll be outputting sound from a mixer.

I've tried using Ableton, but I'm finding it really frustrating and not user friendly. I was wondering if there's an easier way. Thanks.

I use Audacity but need something better. I need better quality, every mix there seems to be a few skips and glitches in the recording using audacity.

Goldwave. That i've been using for loooooong time.

if you already have ableton shouldn't you just use that? i'd assume the quality would be good with that program???

maybe you should just try and find out how to properly record using that.

I record to an iriver with rockbox o/s on it. records to wav if you want, far less hassle than recording to computer, and can take it right away to listen on the run.

Adobe Audition (former CoolEdit)

Sound Studio Pro on the Mac, but these days I use my Samson Zoom H2 recorder directly to a 4GB SD card. Then just copy the file off later, doing any cleanup work or editing in Sound Studio.

Seriously? So you just use a rca to microphone input and record to a 4g stick? how well is that working for you?

Huh? RCA -> line in on the zoom H2.

It works fabulously well.

Are there any cheaper alternatives to the Zoom? I just want something for recording purposes only that plugs in from the record out of the mixer. Does it record directl to mp3 format or wav?

That's about as cheap as it gets...

It can record both MP3 and WAV.

I use Audio Hijack Pro. I LOVE IT!!!!

This program saves in real time, so if your computer crashes, your recording won't be lost. It will be saved up until the crash! That's a big plus for me!

I used to used Sound Studio Pro and it's sick, but I like Audio Hijack Pro a lot better. I don't have to worry about saving the files as it does the auto save in real time.

the zooms are wicked... thats a good choice



you can even do 4 channel recordings on the zoom h4... crowd noise + line level from the mixer...

we have some h4s at school i plan to try this with next semester

Mac only?

Used ACID Pro 6 and ACID Music Studio from sony and they where decent. I also used Audacity.

I used Audacity to record very old cassette tape to pc of a recording of wedding anniversary when tape recorders first came out when my dad was a kid at his grandparents anniversary.

Audio Hijack Pro

Never had any issues with it. Tried Audacity for a while (I prefer Macintosh), but didn't care for the user interface. Bought Audio Hijack Pro and never looked back.

if you dj with ableton live, you can just hit the record button
it records actual data rather than the raw outputs, so if you'd like to fix it up later (cheater!) you can.

i'm not sure how, but if you do add effects in the middle of the set, make sure by default it is off, otherwise when you replay the set, the effect will be enabled starting from the beginning (before you even added the effect into the set). I guess the only way is to go through each effect, disable it, and save the preset. So next time you add the effect, just drag in the preset and it'll be off by default.



OR if you want ableton live to record the raw sound, you can set up a track that is basically feeding all sounds into a master track (so it's sort of second to last in the chain), and basically hit record. but it does take some cpu power away so if you are doing effects heavy, i wouldn't recommend it.

cool edit pro 2.0 for me it's old, but i feel really comfortable with it. I have used Ableton b4, but couldn't figure out how to add more volume to the mix afterwords

Adobe Audition 2.0 or Pro Tools
