Lyric help

I have a chance to work or co-write with a producer with some good connections in the UK and one that i respect but he is on a tight schedule remixes etc. He said if i write a song with lyrics trance style he will co-write and help me get it heard.

I have never written lyrics and I knwo there are some rules to doing so can anyone help. Do i have to write them on beat etc? I am totally in the dark here.

just write a song... regardless of beats, write whats on your mind...

Having a beat helps me with phrasing. Sometimes a certain arrangement of notes can make a verse that sounded perfectly fine in my head sound out of place when matched with the instrumental.
