Google's New Web Browser
| quote: |
Google is launching an open source web browser to compete with Internet Explorer and Firefox. The browser is designed to be lightweight and fast, and to cope with the next generation of web applications that rely on graphics and multimedia. Called Chrome, it will launch as a beta for Windows machines in 100 countries, with Mac and Linux versions to come. "We realised... we needed to completely rethink the browser," said Google's Sundar Pichai in a blog post. The new browser will help Google take advantage of developments it is pushing online in rich web applications that are challenging traditional desktop programs. Google has a suite of web apps, such as Documents, Picasa and Maps which offer functionality that is beginning to replace offline software. "What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build," Mr Pichai, VP Product Management, wrote. The launch of a beta version of Chrome on Tuesday will be Google's latest assault on Microsoft's dominance of the PC business. The firm's Internet Explorer program dominates the browser landscape, with 80% of the market. Those already in the browser space were quick to respond to the news. Writing in his blog, chief executive of Mozilla John Lilly was sanguine about the new rival. "It should come as no real surprise that Google has done something here their business is the web, and theyve got clear opinions on how things should be, and smart people thinking about how to make things better." Chrome will be a browser optimized for the things that they see as important, and itll be interesting to see how it evolves," he wrote. He welcomed the competition and said collaboration between Mozilla and Google on certain projects would continue. |
Niiiiice
This should be interesting to try out and see what Google can do with their own Browser.
should be good!
I was looking through the comic book thing that they made to promote Google Chrome earlier this morning...
Gotta wait though as they are still currently working on the OSX version
LOL, they named it the same as the set of UI elements *in* Firefox???

Jesus fucking Christ, Google, why didn't you just name it Gecko?
stupid... more browsers are just making website building more costly.

Just started using it myself. I thought that candy blue would annoy me, but the minimalist ui is brilliant. Full screen on win vista, it doesn't even look like a browser at first glance.
No menu toolbar.
No title bar.
Thumb nailed favorites.
Web-app shortcuts (tried with gmail pretty nifty, but not much use yet)
Oh and like its been mentioned, its running javascript like a champ...aka its f*kin' fast!
If they can get some sort of Firefox like extension support going, I can see quite a few people moving over.
Javascript benchmark results: Chrome is 1.75 times faster than firefox.
For non-geeks: Almost all your favorite websites extensively use javascript.

I don't want to jump the gun on this one... but i think im in love!!!
Browsers should be completely different than what the are now, this is def the right progression. Some technical work is still needed and i guess... MORE personalization/extensions like on Firefox would be nice too
OMG THIS SHIT IS SO FAST!
ok most stuff don't work proprely in facebook... uhg.
I must say this browser is blazing fast!
I how the name is a bit of a jab toward Firefox.

I like how you can set the browser options/preferences to opening multiple pages on start-up.
I open my browser and whoosh! My university portal, hotmail, TA, facebook, etc. all open up as separate tabs.

i love how the browser completely maximizes your desktop space
1. useless 'windows' title bar..replaced with tab bar
2. status bar only shows up when 'thinking'
3. all my firefox icon hotbuttons easily transferred over
= 15% more desktop browsing pixels
