moving from NJ/NYC to LA
Hey, I am moving from northern NJ to LA within 2 months or so and I have a question about the traffic.
If I were to live in Santa Monica and work in Sylmar, what time would I have to leave my house to miss most of the traffic? 6:30am?
Depends what time you need to arrive.
going east in the morning isn't that bad just leave early on the first day so you can gauge your time, but 10 minutes can make a huge different in traffic in the morning. once you pass downtown it shouldn't be that crowded though. if you need to be at work by 8 am id say try leaving at at like 645 or so.
Well if I had to be at work in Sylmar by 7am, I think I could leave my place in Santa Monica at 6:25am or so? I don't think the traffic could be that bad so early, could it?
According to Google Maps, it's a 27 minute drive: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=...01&ie=UTF8&z=11
That is with no traffic though.

try this:
around 7 am pst go here and check the traffic along your route. that should give you an idea of what to expect:

I really appreciate all of these answers - they help so much.
Any idea what this neighborhood is like?

i think thats a pretty good neighbor hood.
dude.. Imagine route 46 going into the city at 8 am...
Honestly Sylmar is an industrial type city, not a great place. A little better than Newark, ok a lot better than Newark but still a pretty crappy place.
You will have to take the 405 N from Santa Monica and the 405 has the worst morning commute, give yourself at least an hour till you get used to it and slow down as you get closer to Bel Air, People in L.A can't drive in fog and in those early hours you are almost guaranteed to hit fog by the hills
Good luck and welcome

I have been there and shopped many times.
If you leave any later than 7 you are generally screwed. Best to leave before 6:30.

ok.. update for those of you who care.
i found a 1 bedroom apt in Sherman Oaks. it seems like a great area to live in - right near Ventura Blvd, 13m from my office, 15m from Santa Monica, 20 something minutes from Pasadena..
i am up in a hotel in Valencia right now, heading back to the east coast on Friday - but i'll be moving out here permanently in late Oct...
i've been listening to Area 38 (trance and some house) on Sirius radio in my rental car and it's been getting me so amped up!!!
woohooo!!!!
wooo whooo for AREA 38 check out BBC radio 1 channel on friday night for trance anthems......
nice! i'm actually really close to sherman oaks. my commute is 15-20 mins, depending on traffic. if you're going in that early, i bet yours will be closer to 15 mins. good place to live, and not too far from hollywood where all the clubs are.
good luck!

I live in Sherman Oaks, what are your north/south cross streets. You already said you are right by Ventura.. me too.
I am in between Coldwater and Woodman(exits). Narrowed down, I am on the corner of Moorpark/Dixie Canyon.
