What to start out with?

I saved some money to start djing with, I've had a passion in dance music for pretty much my entire life. What type of equipment would I start out with first?(vinyl,serato,mixer,cdjs)

I say get a pair of Technics 1200 MK2s, some needles, and a mixer (good to go). Make sure you have records first though.

I also never left the 80s.

If I had it all to do over again right now I'd go Traktor Scratch.

Low latency, easy Ableton integration - loads of options, relatively small investment.

Vinyl to start? Are you crazy?

That's extremely expensive. I would get some CDJ400s and a decent mixer (like Numark DXM06).

i'll still use ableton for what i was already doing, but i'm just sick of pressing buttons

My homie has sl1200's sitting collecting dust, so I dont know if that would change any of your mind on where I would start. Also, how do all these big names djs find their music ? Isn't most from there huge vinyl collection at home ?

well since your starting you gotta understand the music! download alot of sets and find djs that you like. get the tracklist and download the tracks. find people who like ur similar style of music so u could share music to each other

well most djs spin other people's music. soo dont worry...just fine tune ur ear for good music...that would take you time. i would say around like 1 year solid...

when i started to dj...i would say stay with vinyl...learn how to scratch and learn how to beatmatch. dont cheat and look at the bpm counter. tape up the bpm counter if ur mixer has one.

I was in the same position a couple years ago. A big passion for EDM, and a desire to learn how to start mixing.
I debated on getting a "beginner setup" but finally decided that if I was going to make an investment, I might as well get the stuff that I'd want to upgrade to eventually, anyway.
I ended up with CDJ-1000 MK3's, DJM 600 and Serato Scratch.
I'd recommend it, if you're willing to part with some $. I haven't regretted it and never will.
You don't need the Serato. I started off for a couple months before I got tired of burning a cd everytime I wanted to play a different song. Serato is a very convenient tool.

Arent most of the banging songs that carl cox, and norman cook play vinyls @ some point in time ? Then they switched them over to cd so they could rock out on cdjs?

Im so torn on what do to, I am thinking rock out vinyl till i get pretty good then move on. And mixer wise djm-800 as a first time mixer ?

labels dont release vinyls anymore. itsmore about the mp3 releases. so if u want to get turntable feel get some tables with serato!

Well I have tables so I have maybe 2-3 grand... I believe I can pick out some good music,(guy-j under pressure, Hertz - recreate montana-re-edit.) LoL.... Bash all you want.. Where do I get these mp3/wav releases.
