Beatport tax

Apparently as of yesterday Beatport is adding tax/VAT on top of your total. How come they don't communicate this with their users And where is that tax going anyway?

Well, beatport have just lost me as a customer.

I had 175.00 worth of music carted on their site and had planned on adding to it so i could make a purchase when I next get paid.

I checked it yesterday and the new tax takes it over 200.00

A 3 and 4 track release now costs more at beatport than to buy the vinyl equivilent. 1 track which shows on their site @ 1.99 is now 2.29.

I won't shop with them again, only thing I'll use their site for is listening to samples.

complete ****s.

Not for everyone. I don't get that tax.

Posted by sleepydragon on Sep-03-2008 14:25:

that is wank i imagine most of the uk will pack them in they seem to have an habit of not telling you about things like this they started charging for using a debit card the first i knew about it is when i looked at my statement i bet most people dont have a clue.

Posted by sleepydragon on Sep-03-2008 14:28:

a 1.29 track now costs 1.48
i like how they dont tell you untill you go on checkout

I think its only for certain areas?

Posted by richg101 on Sep-03-2008 14:38:

well, no difference to us british idiots. i feel like i been paying through the nose for everything since i got my first cu,nting bank account. The only people to blame are the bellends who contributed to beatport gaining monopoly on dance music d/l's, This meant a load of pen pushers who would normally be working for tesco/asda/wallmart as professional small business wreckers are now employed in the demanding role of ruining what beatport should be about.

Im upset to say my name is included on the long list of bellends who used beatport on an almost exclusive basis.

Posted by ReclusNdangrmnt on Sep-03-2008 15:07:

Yeah, it's bullsh!t, imo. They should be adjusting their prices to equal what the USD users are paying(ie, a 1.49 USD song should be .75p in GBP)...But tax now?
Ri-f*ckin-diculous.

Maybe it's because they run their payments through England? (I think?)

Have you tried using an anonymous proxy server? That might help
Although it would depend on how they are screening buyers, if it's through IP or through your credit card, bank account, etc.

bunch of fucks i say!

you don't even have to pay VAT for downloads in finland, but they still charge it!?!?

edit: and it's 14,8%? wtf kind of number is that? should be 22% here and 17,5% in the uk afaik. doesn't sound like VAT to me, more like a bullshit excuse to raise the prices!

too bad so many labels sell their stuff only at beatport!

Each country in europe has different % values depending on the type of product/service you are supplying (trust me i work with this ballshit); so a blanket charge of 14.5% VAT smells like ballshit to me.

As previously mentioned, European prices are already exaggerated compared to the dollar... and now... this? In U.S. is there even such a thing as VAT the double standards continue.

i know, that's why i think it's bullshit as it doesn't seem to based on anything.

If the government funded mp3 clean up police come raiding at a gig i am playing, with legal downloads, supported by beatport bills that show i've paid VAT on the tunes i am playing, I really hope i am within my rights to go tell them all to fuck right off.

i couldn't do that here. you have to pay some stupid fee if you want to play tunes off your computer (or self burnt CD-Rs) here.

go world! everything gets more and more fucked up!

Technically its the same here. DJs are just easy targets, easier to police and write up reports about how the fight against illegal downloading is working... when in reality they are no closer to policing the public at large than they were 10 years ago.

the fee has nothing to do with illegal downloads though. you have to pay it if you want to play music you've bought as downloads. you can't play illegally obtained files no matter what (afaik).

Posted by skip on Sep-03-2008 20:58:

just spent a bit over 30 on djdownload, just because i'm so pissed off at beatport. and i'm gonna spend a lot more there as i have a ton of tracks i want to buy (i don't like downloading 150 tracks at once).

Posted by Djeebie on Sep-03-2008 20:59:

I was using Beatport less and less the last couple of months, but I'm only using djdownload and kompakt-mp3.net from now on.

This really is a disgrace, the lack of communication is terrible, you get a little * by your subtotal then an obscene amount whacked on in 'tax'. There's not even an explanation for it.

i noticed. they charge you a few cents for a foreign transaction fee whenever you use a debit card. if i use paypal i don't get charged any extra fees....

djdownload are going to get to receive more attention from me now too; however, its a bitch that some labels are on BP either way in advance of the other sites or completely exclusively.

junodownload seems relatively cheap too, i've never had the urge to compare BP with the competition, but this is one stab in the back too many.
