VMware
I have been loving VMware recently! It is very cool to be able to boot multiple OSs at once. Anyone here use VMware, if so what do you use it for?
VMWare is the BEST virtualization software out there. They have been in the business for a long while. LOVE their products.

| Originally posted by echosystm i'll agree for servers, but for desktop stuff vbox is better imo. all the benchmarks i've seen put vbox a bit ahead of vmware and the seamless desktop mode is priceless - that's the main reason i stopped using vmware. vbox doesn't have drag and drop file support yet, though. |

Just about everything.... I've been using it for about 6 years now if not more and it's definitely kick-arse.
I got my entire lab on a little laptop:
1 Exchange 2007 server (email)
2 Domain Controllers
1 Firewall
oh... and I can also have a cluster in a VM. It's also pretty cool to use for testing out various proggys before loading it on a real computer and messing it up. I had one even running H@ckintosh (Mac OSx hacked for VMware and PC). Cool thing - I run a 32bit windows xp but can run a 64bit OS (server 2008) in a vmware. Pretty neat.

Virtual PC (which is part of server 2008) is forced to play catch-up and probably never will.

I use it for development. When jumping between clients every few months, it's nice to have an environment ready to go when you're ready to work. Saves a lot of time (and client's money) on mere setup.

Hmm, never used vbox, but the drag and drop file support is paramount. That is how I transfer files!!!!! Wrong. It is best used for development to sandbox the program you are writing in an effort to keep external factors from causing problems. |
