speakers or monitors!

hi am am after a good sounding pair of speakers or monitors, is there any differance between a pair of speakers and monitors? also does the wattage make a differance? example buying a cheap pair of 50 watt speakers and buying a 20 watt pair of m-audio... i have 120 to spend on some or a little more if need be, could anyone recomend some nice ones for similar price....thanks for your time!

If you are after a good sounding speaker setup get a nice hi-fi setup with a sub.

What will be the purpose of the speakers?

Regular or "hi-fi" speakers are meant to sound "good", whereas studio monitors are meant to sound "accurate".

For 120 you won't find anything even semi-decent.
If you're into producing it's better to save up for a longer time instead of buying bad monitors.

For listening - You want hi-fi speakers. They colour the sound and make it warm and pleasurable to listen to. Monitors will make you hear things you don't want to and could make tracks actually sound "bad" in a way.

For production - You want monitors. Good ones don't colour the sound and you hear everything much easier.

Hay, its hard to fing "good" monitors to 120 if u want buy any please earn more money (about 400-500) why?

because easer to buy one good for few years,

im using now Yamaha's Monitors HS 80m (price: something aobut: 450 )

u can buy m-audio (prce: 300 ) but they have not good low frequences.

best regards.

If you're truly interested in producing don't skimp on monitors! You can't spend your money on anything more important than a pair of quality monitors IMO.

i aint skimping i am only just starting!!! within a few month i will have more money to spend on better things, i am only starting out at the moment

im more than happy doing normal listening on my monitor system, caus most of the tracks i like are good enough produced to sound good on anything, and better on good systems. only problem with the monitors (small ones atleast) is the spread: they sound good in that particular listening position but once ur going on the other side of the room its just noise and mudd. theyr not very good at a party as its impossible to talk at the same time as these monitors are forcing u to listen: "listan!!". normal speakers are more friendly and often covers a larger room. great for party, movies stuff like that.

M-audio monitors are crap IMO. At least get a pair of alesis m1 mk2's or some cheaper krk's which are far from perfect, but can get the job done. If you're just starting out, the most important thing to get are decent monitors. skip the soundcard for now if you have to, but get the best monitors you can.
Also keep in mind that whatever you buy, you'll probably have to replace later on as there's no monitors in that price range that will "tell the truth". Ofc, This all applies to you if you're planning on producing music yourself (which I'm guessing is your plan seeing how you're on a production forum).
Forget about hi-fi speakers. Trust me, I used them once. The worst thing you can do is get accustomed to using hi-fi speakers for production. Later on your ears are gonna need quite a bit of training to get used to monitors.
