Wink READ : 'alternative' people's opinion in belgium towards trance music

hey

Here's someone's opinion about trance, i don't know where it comes from, but this could easily be one of belgium's alterntive community saying his opinion about trance music, sadly enough & i hate it... (not that they have their own opinion, but just their attitude) :

quote:

The trance that i hear (and this may well be untipical of the genre) is on the whole extremely twee music its fast and forcefull but it never seems to know where its going, its often very polished music theres no glitches or dirt etc, that kind of removes the sound i hear from a living thing. When i listen to trance music i cannot imagine anyone actually making the thing that i hear.

i hear no agression, anger or negative feelings on the whole in this kind of music and on the other side there seems to be no real positive feelings ,it seems to be aiming to create a kind of mindless euphoria in the listener, at the end of the day i think the majority of trance is like the world add people would like us to believe we live in and is ultimatly empty of substance and uses cliches, production technology and complexity to compensate for this lack of content.

i have heard a few trance tracks i like but on the whole thats what the music makes me think when i hear it, sorry...

well i think he's putting it too generally... personally i haven't heard any music genre better to me than trance. but if someone generalises trance like that i think that person could be a bit arrogant to say so

there are ALOT of people that like trance and do feel touched by it and tell emotions coming from it. see such is life by Rank 1, which was played at a funeral so ive heard one time. Then the sound of goodbye by armin's perpetuous dreamer gives away alot of emotion as well : powerful vocals, somewhat tragic & dramatic and a good lead that goes by it.

but then there are alot of other people who don't like trance at all, but like metal, rock, rap, r&b or other sorts of music. i do like other sorts of music, i listen to rock & pop alot every now and then. but in my area, and i think it's somewhat typical for the belgian alternative community; there is alot of rescentment towards trance... people that are into other genres immediately place it as BAD/RUBBISH/'NOISE', while metal isn't short of just 'noise' either. sometimes i'm starting to think they're afraid... afraid that trance will eventually make up for whole the music scene since it's still growing and growing WORD!

but then again... i'd really love some mutual respect towards all kinds of music, especially from those people since i have nothing against the other sorts of music. where would it lead us elsewhere?

well, that's my opinion about it, i've made some topics about this before, but it's true... sadly enough

take care!

hmm .. not sure why he thinks music should be aggressive and what not ... thats one reason trance is so appealing. all that ego and shit is basically left at the door, people coming to appreciate good music.

unless of course they consider sandstorm or the whistle song to be trance

problem is that alotof people are getting to hear these 'trance' songs first and make their opinion about trance music that way... so they'll never appreciate 'true' trance music

hehe... what a hard world it is all i want is some mutual respect towards all genres... i don't think trance people have that problem, i've never met one who was arrogant about trance music towards other genres... it's just that, well... you know

dont worry abt others opinion too much m8

~70% of estonian "alternative" ppl HATE trance.. yes they literally hate it giving excused such as "only-ppl-who-take-lsd-or-E-could-listen-to-smthn-like-this" well at first when I listened to their "opinions" I was like

but now I really dont care what others think I just enjoy music what I like

Posted by Mr.Mystery on May-28-2002 15:24:

Once again:
WHY do people care about opinions like that?

yeah, i enjoy the music alot myself as well it's just not nice to hear when you wanna spin one at someone's home and people say like "turn off that noise" or start turning their eyes like "oh no, not that again"... really annoying

metal is just noise as well, we trancers don't understand it either, but if they wanna hear one, hey let them have it... it's just the other's opinion that way that bothers me

cheers!

well, if you live between those people, you do have to care... they determine when and where you can play the tunes sadly enough
they seemed to have got this "veto-right" when it' coming to playing tunes at someone's home when we do a homeparty...

tell me if you don't need to care that way

Rock is dead.

It has no emotion anymore, no good guitar work, nothing but straight doses of mediocracy.

Have you heard anyone as good as Clapton or Hendrix on the guitar? No.

Today's rock's emotion is like.... "start... EMOTION EMOTION EMOTION EMOTION EMOTION...end."

Trance's emotion is like "start...eeeeeeeeeeeeeemmmmmmmmmmmmmoooooooooottttttiiiiiiooooonnnnnn."

it flows, it has no boundries, it's PURE emotion. those who say it has no emotion is dumb, beautiful trance DOES.

well back in the old days (end of 70's for example) when rock music was HOT, then all kids wanted to become guitarist's & rock singer's....

nowadays when electronic music is popular, everybody wants to be a DJ

its normall progress of life I guess.. I wonder what will music become in, let's say 20 years... It will probably be just random noises

Posted by oDrori on May-28-2002 21:01:

Ws the problem? Dude said, and I quote: "The Trance that I hear (And it could well be untypical to the genre)..." so he actually never even said anything about the whole Trance. He's OK, he just doesn't see the point in Trance just like you wouldn't seeit in Latin and I won't in World Music... He said Trance lacks Dirt, yes it's true in a lot of cases and especially imagine that a ude that isn't very interested in Trance hears some Trance on the radio or anything... What would he hear? Ian Van Dahl? Probably... Lasgo? Definitely... Do these artists have any friggin' bit of dirt in their tracks? Crap no. Also Melodic/ Uplifting have no dirt ussually... So that's what he heard (Again, the whole post reffers to the Trance he heard!)

Davinox :

you're right about that... i also adore some of those old(er) rock tracks like "led zeppelin - stairway to heaven", "metallica - nothing else matters", "live - lightning crashes", "nirvana - smells like teen spirit", "the cranberries - zombie", "crash test dummies - mm mm", "soundgarden - black hole sun" and many others...

but if you take a look at groupies like Linkin Park, Papa Roach and all the other bunches of 'noise' rock music, you can see that there's so little thought in it... they go about yelling for three to four minutes and that's about it... and most of the time they say their 'honest' opinion about authorities blahblah... jeez times sure have changed

Live has some real good stuff though... and Novastar... and the latest by Eskobar & Heather Nova ar egetting my attention as well And let's not forget the almighty Within Temptation - Ice Queen...wow!

cheers mate

That's exactly what i mean my good friend oDrori

People who listen to rock and other genres listen to these 'trance' (rather dance) tracks first and that way they make up their opinion on trance music... and that's what i think is for shame... they really have that repulsion on the 'commerciality' of trance. like linkin park wouldn't be commercial

his opinion is ok, but i just wonder on what he has based himself... as well trance as dance can be not offensive, but does it really have to? i mean like linkin park shouting their throat out of their bodies won't exactly mean that 'this is music' right?

i want mutual respect from my mates dammit but there is no at the moment... pity

Ghost Smilie

Rank 1 - Such is life is great! thanks for mentioning it! i have been trying to find similiar nightwish style trance songs for a long time but they seem to be hard to find... Sector 5 - Nostradamus is another good one.

- Trance forevah! if people don't know good music when they hear it **** 'em all then... atleast we know

Beautifully said ! Much respect to whoever wrote this. Just think about it, 95% of trance tracks are based on euphoric "happy" and "uplifting" sound and atmosphere. This is why it is so fake and plastic - there is a much more to a music experience than non-stop euphoria. Dark evil meanacing morbid tracks should be just as much part of any music style, but most trance producers fail to realise this, and continue to come out with cheese.

Also QUIT BEING SO ELITIST ABOUT TRANCE! Just because you like that particular style doesn't mean that it's the ultimalte perfection in music.

That's not what I'm saying though

What I'd just like to see, is those people actually respecting trance for what it is... at least consider that, cause there are many people loving it for a reason.
Not 90% of trance is uplifting/euphoric... there's ALOT of other stuff out there as well. look at "perpetuous dreamer - sound of goodbye", "rank 1 - such is life",... those are all quite dramatic tracks and with a message as well... so no 'mindless' euphoria i think.

I said that I'm also addicted to alot of rock tunes (but not linkin park ect), so why would I be a "trance elitist"? Just some respect... Them trying to bare other people when it's playing somewhere and not running away from it... those things

cheers!

i don't hate them, but i can't see why they can't bring up that small effort that i pay to their music... guess that do'nt make them bad people, but then again, cant they see that it hurts me when they're doing that? then i ask myself that question again whether if they're really nice people or haven't thought of that yet... but nothing helps really
they live in some sort of 'denial' i believe, but i dunno why... they don't wanna have anything to do with trance whatsoever.

i only hate them because of the fact its arrogance of the highest degree towards other peoples feelings about things, which often leads to annoying discriminational acts and a "high horse" type attitude where they will judge you as stupid if you listen to this music.

This is a bit off topic, but seriously Davinox, what you're saying about rock here is total BS.From what you've written,it looks your way of defining rock is the likes of Nickelback,Linkin Park and Creed, who are nothing but crap, and are as representative for the rock genre today as DJ Alligator Project,Alice Deejay and ATB are for trance.Rock today is as alive and kicking as ever, and just because it doesn't contain a bevy of guitar masturbations a la Hendrix and Jimmy Page(which is just plain boring after a while) doesn't mean that it's mediocre immediately. There's so much more to rock than this. The fact is that we have some of the most brilliant, cool and creative rock musicians touring the world as we speak. The Hives,The Strokes,White Stripes,Gluecifer,Rival Schools,...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead...I could go on for a long time.

Rock is not just about your guitar skills, like it seems like many of you think.Back in the 70s-80s the rock artists got more and more obsessed with showing of their skills rather than writing good songs.Hence,IMHO,rock disappeared up it's own ass of guitar solo-hell.The songwriting capabilities of today's rock artists are still great, and contrary to back then, writing good songs is now the most important thing, and that makes today's rock so much more interesting than the guitar masturbation that the audience got fed with during the 70s and 80s.Don't get me wrong, old rock is fantastic, and some of the biggest musical geniuses originated here, but that time is OVER.It's time to move on,and make something that's fresh and new.
But for some reason, americans have a tendency to overlook bands like the ones I mentioned and keep defining rock as a genre with crap bands like Limp Bizkit etc.Open your eyes, dammit!!

Then it's the emotion part.Trance can be the most beautiful emo-trip that any genre of music has to offer. But it can alos be nauseatingly simple, cheesy and formulaic. The fact is that if trance hadn't gone through the development that it did from '99 to 2000,trance as a genre would be dragging its rotting corpse through the streets, only carried by the same old-same-old "buildup-crescendo-riff-done"-pacakage.By that I mean that the 90s trance sound was so worn out, overplayed and overused that it would've gone headfirst into the gutter if the creative development towards progressive wouldn't have come. There's still much of the same 99'-syndroms around in the trance scene(unfortunately),and that's why many consider it to be dead creatively. Those of us involved in the trance scene of course know that that isn't true, but these attitudes are very similar to the attitudes people like you have towards rock,Davinox. So all I'm saying is:make sure you know what you're talking about before you go out bashing a whole genre like somebody who bashes trance when all the person has heard is Darude and ATB.

(I could also start on my rant on how inable trance is to express aggression compared to rock, but that would be far to subjective as I generally think hardtrance is pathetic and many don't.)

yeah you're right, some of them people would actually describe it as 'stupid' to listen to this music... and that hurts someone's feelings, doesn't it?

i seriously believe rock isn't dead yet, but it's less present and more latent i think with today's youth... maybe that's why most people miss out on the 'great' rock music? i don't know...

What can you do? Linkin Park and Pappa Roach actually DO resemble the Rock world today... There are more pissed bands than anything else.
