DVD/Blu-Ray vs Download

Has anyone else just said "fuck it" to buying DVDs/Blu-Gays and decided just to download the shows/movies from the internet? It seems pointless now to even own a DVD cuz it gets scratched the fuck up all the time.

What you reckon? Do you think DVD/Blu-Rays are gonna end up like CDs which ended up like cassettes? Gradual phase-out? How long do you think it'll take until DVD/Blu-Rays phase out?

Posted by Darkarbiter on Sep-11-2008 06:36:

Blu ray dvd=50gigs (or maybe 30 average or whatever)
Concidering my net is 20/20 a month, thats a tad high to be downloading tons of stuff. So, for now with the cost of net, I'd say physical, theres also the fact I just plain prefer having the cd/dvd+case of stuff.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-11-2008 06:39:

Can iPods play movies yet? I don't own one, so I don't keep up with the developments.

Since big-time storage is getting cheaper and cheaper, I predict that movies will soon (next ten to twenty years) be released primarily in the form of digital files rather than on physical media, similar to what is happening with music now.

It shouldn't be long before you can have a portable device capable of holding a few terabytes of data (which translates to a few thousand movies), and simply hook it up to a TV and play your movies.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-11-2008 06:41:

Currently the main limitation on this stuff is simply net connection speed.

One solution would be to make today's "video stores" into net terminals with very high speed access, capable of downloading movies of your choice onto a portable hard drive, rather than just galleries holding a bunch of physical DVDs.

Oh SHIT! I didn't know it has that much. Yeh maybe this phase-out will happen way into the future.

Yes they do. I finally caught up to the year 2006 and bought one, and then watched Reno 911 Season 5 on it on my way to Germany. It was awesome.

Posted by biznology on Sep-11-2008 06:51:

the issue is that, yeah, getting some random show you missed on the net is easy, but most people arent that savvy.

AND HAVE YOU SEEN 1080p? most people dont have a tv thats capable either...

the 360 is getting set up with dl netflix, so there is definitely gonna be a switch to mostly digital. but its the mp3 vs CD/DVD-audio discussion. there isnt THAT much of a difference, but there IS a difference if you are into that kind of thing.

mostly bluray should hang on for a bit just because of storage capacity and burning capabilities.

I have a PS3 and a 1080p TV , but I dont have any movies on Blue-Ray. I cant imagine paying 10 for a movie when I can get 100Gb usenet account with giganews for the same price and download about 50 movies , 100 TV Shows and Albums with one click. Even DVD Rips are watchable and they are only 1Gb , in reality you could fit 50 movies on a Blue Ray disk so why just have 1 movie in better quality.

If its a good movie Ill goto a movie and watch it , if its a good rare album ill purchase it.

That's a shit attitude. How many awesome movies did you NOT see in a cinema simply because you'd never heard of it? How many albums have you ripped, that were great, though you never went and purchased them?

And what if these movies (this also applies to music) were in specific genres that you enjoy, but were not particularly popular with the majority of the population? Do you think you'll be seeing much new stuff released in that genre, seeing as how it makes no money (everyone just rips it off instead of supporting it)?

You're just fucking yourself over.

And people complain that music/movies are so shit these days...

1. I use to buy DVD's at 19.99 for many years , I have a massive DVD Collection , prob around 1000+ DVD's I have spent thousands on movies that I have only watched once.

2. I have a shed with about 1000's of music albums all on CD which i use to pay 11.99 for each album .

All you need to do is watch MTV Cribs just to see that all these artists are overpaid.

Also were the hell do you store all the discs , im running out of wall space.

The future is downloading , its not my fault technology has won this battle.

LOL. You're going to use MTV as a benchmark? How about the non-mainstream artists? You think they're rolling in cash?

You don't think artists should be paid? Musicians should, perhaps, just make music because they love doing it, not for any reward...

Yes the future is downloading but legally, not off Usenet

Oh no, not getting payed (or not enough to stay afloat sometimes) is serious non issue made up drama.

Theres omg you are worst person ever after admitting to pirating something (when you usually buy stuff) then there are retards like you.

You dumbass , What you haven't read is that I have already contributed my hard earned money to the industry many years ago and now im left with media which will be as useful as a frisbee in the next couple of years due to new technology offering higher capacity disks just take a look the VHS / Tape industry.

Times have changed , internet speeds are getting faster and hard drives are getting bigger.

" Thats what she said. "

regular DVD's will become obsolete very soon, but Blu-Ray is a little ways off from being obsolete. A few more years with storage becoming larger and cheaper, they will also go. It's just too bulky and impractical to have all these discs that like u said, get scratched and become useless.

Posted by gehzumteufel on Sep-11-2008 15:46:

All physical mediums will become obsolete in 2 years. Especially with the new Red One camera that movies are being shot in, theaters being converted to digital (10,000 in a short time, which is 25% of the total theater count, have been slated for upgrade over the next year) and digital availability rising.

Also, Sushi, I hate to rain on your parade, but the reason people pirate has NOTHING to do with getting something for free so much as buying album with 15 songs and 13 of them are total shit because the MAFIAA forces them to put out what they want them to.

One thing I forgot to mention. The OP is from the US where metered connections do not exist. Hence why he had the "what's the big deal" mentality.

Exactly and Mexicans should just make me my god damn Chipotle burrito for free because they love to work for next to nothing anyway ...right?

LOL this is why when people say "Jake you should put out an album" I say "that's fucking retarded what is this the 90s?"

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Sep-12-2008 08:07:

I take great care of my DVDs and have rarely had an issue with scratches or wear. But I know people do have a problem with the amount of space thousands of DVD boxes can take (or the excessive work they put into making custom mini-boxes/catalogs).

I have a netflix account and still visit Hollywood video from time to time.
If i do download movies, it's to get some of the movies in pre-release rips (Dark Knight, Wall-E, etc). I still end up buying/renting them anyways for the extra content.

As to the above scuffle about Sushipunk and Rostros:
There is no real difference to the customer when it comes to buying or pirating an album. If you try really hard, you can force yourself to feel a sense of satisfaction in handing over $10 that will get ultimately spliced up a zillion ways to eventually trickle down to your intended recipient. If it's a unknown artist, you've just given him (or her) half of his bus fare. If it's an "mtv mainstream" artist, you've contributed something insignificant. Why not just keep the money and still end up with a CD rip?

When Napster was "the big deal", the record industry was trying to appeal to customers by reminding them how good it feels to buy physical copies (this was before digital retail)-standing in line, opening the plastic, smelling the compact disc, other things I filed under "bullshit."
There's a difference between the "experience" lost between pirating music and movies, namely the social aspect of theaters.

I've bought less physical copies, purchased more digital music, but still being significantly trumped by my amount of piracy. I WOULD like to go back to buying more physical copies of my music. But if the purchase entails $14 to cover the plastic and a single SHITTY sleeve with the album cover and a generic times new roman tracklist on the back, why not go online to iTunes? And since I'm at my computer, why not just pirate it?

Long post shortened significantly the the point of not understanding the final thesis, "put more junk in CD cases!"

Posted by Darkarbiter on Sep-12-2008 08:43:

Erm, I prefer owning cds. Don't feel satisfied with an album, where its pirated or legally downloaded in lossless if its not physical.

Burn the lossless. Problem solved.
