P.O.D. Volunteer work needed at University of Houston/ Thursday, Friday, & Saturday
I know this doesn't pertain to many of you (students, that is), but here is a message from the UH president Renu Khator.
"The University of Houston will serve as a Point of Distribution (POD) center Thursday through Saturday, providing water, ice and packaged meals to the public. Volunteers from our campus community especially students are needed to help staff this Hurricane Ike relief effort. The POD will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. but organizers hope a substantial number of volunteers will arrive between 7 and 7:30 a.m. for initial preparations.
Volunteers are needed throughout the day and you can work for whatever period of time you choose. And, of course, you are encouraged to wear your Cougar Red apparel. The POD facility will be set up in Parking Lot 12B, between Robertson Stadium and Scott St. Volunteers are asked to check-in at the "Tailgate Area" when they arrive. Those who usually park in the 12B area are asked to use alternative lots around the campus. Please call 832-842-5550 with any questions."
The POD that has been operating at TSU will be moved to UH Thursday through
Saturday. Here are some useful details about traffic and parking and a map
(attached).
The UH POD will be located in Lot 12B on the west side of Robertson Stadium.
Vehicle entrance to the POD will be via the entrance to Lot 12A off Scott at
Cleburne (across from Burger King). The lot will be roped off to allow
vehicles to serpentine their way north in Lot 12A to Lot 12B where the PODs
will be set up. Vehicle exit will be at the entrance to Lot 15D West off
Scott at Alabama.
Pedestrian traffic will be routed along the sidewalk on the west side of Lot
12A/15D to the POD location. The drive between Lot 12A and Lot 15D West will
be blocked to vehicular traffic.
Students parking in Lot 12A are encouraged to use the entrance off Wheeler
Street.
While none of Student Parking Lot 15D will be used for this event, we
anticipate that traffic on Scott Street will be greater than normal. The
University is encouraging our students who park in Lot 15D to access the lot
from the Cullen side. There are three entrances to Lot 15 from Holman as
well as the entrance to Lot 15 D East off Cullen. Please do not try to enter
from the Scott side.
HPD will be working traffic control on Scott Street. UHDPS Personnel, 5-Star
Security and possibly members of the Texas National Guard will be working
traffic and crowd control inside the lots and POD area.
The first truck loads of supplies are scheduled to arrive sometime after
midnight. They will be staged in Lot 12B.
UH volunteers to arrive no later than 7:30 am Thursday at the Tailgate Area.
UH Shuttle Bus routes have been adjusted to accommodate the use of this lot
for this event.
The official opening time is 7 a.m. but the POD will open as soon as enough
volunteers arrive.
The POD will shut down at 6 p.m
Thursday, not sure about Friday, and Saturday for sure, I will be volunteering to help out at the UH POD. If any TA from the Houston area would like to catch a ride with me up there, give me a call. There will be free food and drinks provided for you. I will be leaving Katy around 6am. If you could make it up there, that would be greatly appreciated of you. Any help at this time would be greatly appreciated.
