Bands with drug/drinking problems

It fails to surprise me how ridiculous some of these musicians are. Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones whacks a guy with his guitar... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv1bM0pp_o4

Lars from Metallica is just a flat out nut... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmHx2blktwU

And here we have some unknown struggling bands who can't handle their liquor... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF6VEwa9JR0

Don't see many DJ's getting out of hand.. or maybe we just don't hear about it.

You're obviously paying attention to the wrong DJs.

Who cares what they do?

I have seen plenty of DJs totally wrecked. You just have to see them backstage before or after they DJ. They *try* to keep their composure most of the time for the gig.

One night I was playing two sets, one from 10-11:30, and another from 12:30-2.

Following the first I found myself completely mashed thanks to excessive amounts of shots and drinks being handed to me.

I realized something needed to happen before I tried to play my second set, and began to make my way to the bathroom only to realize I wasn't going to make it.

I raised the empty glass in my hand as if I were taking a drink and just let loose inside of it, being sure to toss the evidence in the first garbage can I saw.

Made it to the bathroom, water on the face, and I was good as new. The second set might have been one of the best I've ever played out.

Hmm, maybe the advice I gave to a newbie in the Production Studio wasn't so bad after all:

Always drink at least six shots of whiskey immediately before producing, and three or four shots for each hour after that. This will loosen you up and allow you to express yourself like a true artist.

You could charge for advice like that.

haha
i love to drink when i write
if i get writers block my solution is usually drink a bit more
then i get distracted cause im' not sober and go play games or something, then close the game and see ableton there with nothing accomplished, get really sad and mad at myself for failing, and then i'm in the right mood to write

This idiot I knew tried to get in his car drunk after the club had closed and the cops were just standing there watching him struggle with his keys, so they walk over and ask if he's planning on driving drunk.

His genius answer:

"Nah boys I've got some streesch (coke) in my car".

He got a night in the drunk tank for that, they were nice though and just tossed his stash down a sewer.

yeah i hear that. a couple years ago I was so hammered at a bar, that I couldn't speak any more and was about to go down with the ship. Then a friend of mine shows up with some blow. I go to the bathroom, do a couple of key bumps, and BAM! It was like someone put my head next to a gong right before it got pounded. I was instantly awake, full of energy, and ready to party for another couple of hours. Only thing that sucks is that I felt so sober, I went back to the bar... the next morning was horrible.

I heard from a biochemist that when drug addicts overdose on drugs (forget whether it's heroin or cocaine), copious amounts of alcohol are used to fuck with the dopamine / serotonin / whateverenin and counter the effects.

Kind of why you can't really candyflip (E+LSD) randomly and have to time it right.

I can't imagine anyone actually doing this. Heroin OD is treated with naloxone (alcohol would just kill you faster its a depressant also). There is no accepted treatment for cocaine OD but if you were trying a depressant you would use benzos not alcohol

^ This guy has it right.

they smashed that guitar. what a waste!

So when you do a lot of Coke in a night and also drink like a fish. Are the two drugs actually counteracting one another? Or are the 'symptoms' of each just masked by the other? Meaning, are you high & drunk at the same time? Or actually sober, due to the depressant/stimulant interaction? I know I'm a drug noob.

When you are using coke or any stimulant along with a depressant you are somewhat offsetting the effects of one with the other. But on top of that you also get the synergistic effects of the combination of the two substances, which in the case of coke and alcohol your body creates cocaethylene. Cocaethylene is longer lasting and more stimulating than coke alone which is a bonus right? Yes, but on the downside it is also many more times cardiotoxic than cocaine alone so while you are having a real good time you might also be killing yourself. Not to say a lot of people don't mix the two and if you are using normal doses of coke and alcohol you are probably ok unless of course you have a heart problem already.

To me the bigger problem is that, like you said, when you are using depressants if you start mixing in stimulants you mask the effects of the depressants so you are high and drunk at the same time. This can be bad if you are using a short duration of action stimulant like coke because the depressant can outlast its effects. Say you drink 10 drinks and don't feel drunk because you have been railing coke so you hop in the car and go home. If you quit using the stimulant all of the sudden its effects will wear off and you are now dealing with the full force of the depressants which could be really bad for you if you are still driving at the time.

Plus if you are a regular depressant user (say opiates or benzos) and you combine stimulants in you might be tempted to take more downers because you don't feel the same depressant 'high' that you normally do. This could lead you to take an overdose that doesn't become apparant until the stimulant wears off.

So yeah its best if you have some experience and know what you are doing before you combine them.

edit: of course I'm doing exactly this right now because I mixed too much gin into the G&T I'm drinking at work so I doubled the dose of my ADHD meds to keep me from getting too faded lol

Posted by cmay119 on Sep-26-2008 17:26:

Thanks for the response on that. Very informative, I wasn't aware that the body, actually combines the two to make a different drug than what was previously consumed. Are you a biology/chemistry student? Or have you just dealt with enough drugs to know?
