Slick commercials or not, Vista still blows.

Why not just make a good product?

I think it's somewhat a fail
what are they trying to achieve there? at least in PC vs. MAC it's actually humorous
this just left me with a "so?"

Posted by chico on Sep-20-2008 00:20:

about a year or so late

Microsoft reps went to VMWare conference to give out poker chips advertising their product that's competing with VMWare.

Read more here, it's a pretty interesting story: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/itmanagemen...39489337,00.htm

They're trying to promote their product without belittling their competition while at the same time countering the ads of their competition. They're making ads in direct response to Apple without ever mentioning Apple. I think it's a pretty clever way to come back.

I really hate advertisement that attacks the competition. I believe you should be able to sell your product without talking shit about the products you're competing with. That's why I'm really biased against companies like Pepsi and Energizer.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day.

Although maybe they're humorous in an ironic sense, in that the "typical" Mac user they supposedly glorify is an obnoxious preening douchenozzle who makes you want to punch him in the face with his own nutsack with every puerile word that comes out of his clamorous mouth. But I don't think that's the type of humour they were shooting for.

Microsoft has, for once, actually taken the high road. They've answered the accusation that they cater to a bunch of philistines, without escalating it into the schoolyard bullying that Apple and its fanboys all seem to be so very fond of.

DigiNut and Meat Katie are right. If you know any basics to advertising, you'd know that trying to stomp on a competitors name within your advertisement shows that your product(s) are completely inferior.

Simple and basic common sense.

I just hope Apple is done with their series of ads. It's tired and boring and most people have had enough.

Pepsi once did it to coke where a Pepsi truck stopped at red light with a Coke truck. The Coke truck was playing some low key cheese music while the Pepsi truck blasted out music while having the hydraulics shooting the car up and down.

Pretty lame advertising if you can't think of anything better to be honest.

by definition that logic fails if the two big competitors attack each other in their ads, doesn't it? they can't BOTH be inferior to one
another, lol

IMHO, it's more arrogance than anything (or a complete lack of imagination).

"I'll even mention your name/product and not worry about giving you free advertising...because I think we're *that* much superior".

the high (and more clever) road is indeed not to mention/show the competition at all...or to make a more veiled reference to them.

I don't find this "I'm a PC" ad campaign to be particuarly exciting or brilliant, but it's not offensive to the intellect (as is 98% of most advertising, IMHO).

If you have to remind the audience you are better than the competitor n your advertisements, there is clearly something wrong with the companies personal outlook at their product.

ie. Hey everyone buy our pop, its better. It's basically what they are trying to do.

In Apple's case, our OS system is better than Vista, which has a lot of bugs.

How many of those commercials are there thus far? There's clearly a leverage Apple is trying get the upper hand on. Too bad they only own 8% of the market share so far. But we'll see where Ballmer will take the company in the next 5-8 years.
