Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks many calling them "lazy," "violent," responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 about two and one-half percentage points.

Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.

More than a third of all white Democrats and independents voters Obama can't win the White House without agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.

Such numbers are a harsh dose of reality in a campaign for the history books. Obama, the first black candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, accepted the Democratic nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, a seminal moment for a nation that enshrined slavery in its Constitution.

"There are a lot fewer bigots than there were 50 years ago, but that doesn't mean there's only a few bigots," said Stanford political scientist Paul Sniderman who helped analyze the exhaustive survey.

The pollsters set out to determine why Obama is locked in a close race with McCain even as the political landscape seems to favor Democrats. President Bush's unpopularity, the Iraq war and a national sense of economic hard times cut against GOP candidates, as does that fact that Democratic voters outnumber Republicans.

The findings suggest that Obama's problem is close to home among his fellow Democrats, particularly non-Hispanic white voters. Just seven in 10 people who call themselves Democrats support Obama, compared to the 85 percent of self-identified Republicans who back McCain.

Statistical models derived from the poll suggest that Obama's support would be as much as 6 percentage points higher if there were no white racial prejudice.

I was afraid this would happen. I'm ignoring all the polls from now until election day because I have a gut feeling that once many older white voters get into the voting booth and it's time to make that final decision, most issues will fly out the window. They will look down at their ballot and see "Vote - President of the United States: BARACK OBAMA ..and think, "damn..am I really gonna vote for this guy? Really?? He's so young and so different from everything we've ever had.. *sigh* I just can't take the chance..better not rock the boat. Better be safe and vote for the old white man again."

A day to pack your bags and move to Europe if there ever was one. But leave all the racists and jesus freaks behind, we don't want them. Also make sure you bring the nuclear launch codes with you just in case.

i've been watching all these jerk-off pundits telling their readers and viewers lately if Obama loses it will be directly attributed to racism....yeah, racist Democrats.

other than that there is absolutely no reason he should lose on the merits of race.

Racial views may steer some republicans to Obama.

It's interesting how the Israelis view Obama. He receives much support
both from Jewish liberals and arguably the right-wing AIPAC, but his
middle name bothers Israelis a lot. Also, there are doubts whether he is
really a Muslim apostate. Here is an article which analyzes Obama's
similarity to early Zionists:

so that means you think barack should beat mccain simply based on issues? (not to say you support him).

anyway, the people of this country never fail to disappoint me. It's amazing what a different world the northeast coast (plus the pacific) is from much of the nation. Now i know how the people of quebec feel.

Rush Limbaugh feeding the flames....
quote:
Yesterday on his radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is Arab. Hes Arab. You know, hes from Africa. Hes from Arab parts of Africa, Limbaugh claimed.

Today Limbaugh repeated the lie. While attempting to deny that race may play a role in the presidential campaign, Limbaugh read portions of a Philadelphia Daily News article by Dave Davies. Limbaugh inaccurately quoted Daviess article, inserting the word Arab into a description of Obamas ethnicity. According to Limbaugh, the article read:

Obamas name and his Arab-African heritage are obstacles to the partys chances of capturing the White House, party activists are finding.

Watch it:

In reality, Daviess article reads:

Obamas name and his African heritage are obstacles to the partys chances of capturing the White House, party activists are finding.

As Yglesias notes, Obamas father was, for the record, from Kenya which is not an Arab part of Africa. Limbaughs latest attempt to stoke racist fears of Obama is particularly ironic considering the fact that Limbaugh penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal last Friday accusing Obama of stoking racial antagonism.

Limbaugh, however, has used his radio show again and again to do exactly that. In the last 18 months, Limbaugh repeatedly played a song that called Obama the Barack the Magic Negro, argued that Obama has disowned his white half, and referred to Obama as the affirmative action candidate.
