Funny or Humorous folkways.

Anyone know of any Folkways that we do in culture that humorous, funny, or downright absurd?

I've got a small paper due tommorow about 'Funny Folkways' for my Sociology class, but I can't think of anything that's all that funny. Anyone want to take a stab at this one? Or know one right off the top of their heads?

I always found shaking hands (when you meet someone) to be kind of weird and pointless.

Yeah, that is kind of odd... I could work with that I'm pretty sure. Thanks Sushi!

Japanese people bow every two words.

Although funny, I wonder if I should 'go there'. Being an assignment for class and all, I could see myself getting in a little trouble for that one.

Maybe not though, I might be able to tie that in as another sort of social embrace along with handshaking, high fiving, etc.

Saying bless you after sneezing.

I can kind of understand this though. Apparently your heart stops when you sneeze.

That's bullshit - You know that, right?

Posted by Sunsnail on Sep-22-2008 02:34:

and that has what to do with being blessed

No, I never really even though about it.

"God bless you," shortened to "bless you" comes from way in the past, in Rome (I think) when sneezing was a sign of illness. Of course, without proper medical techniques, illness usually resulted in death.

They do? I've been studying them for quite a few years, and I've never seen this kind of thing

Posted by wotyzoid on Sep-22-2008 02:50:

They bow A LOT, at least from what I've seen. Like A LOT!

Just as often as we shake hands, actually. They do bob their heads a lot more often, though.

That's what I meant. I was at the city with some friends a few weeks ago and we met these japanese girls that were exchange students and while talking to them half the time they would be looking at us and the other half at the ground. Very awkward.

They don't really find eye contact very pleasant either, by the way

I noticed.

You're not suppose to look people higher than you (ie your boss, parents, etc) or strangers in the eye.

Sign of disrespect.

Kinda funny because in western culture, if you don't look people in the eye when you're talking to them that's being rude.

I still find myself looking away at people when I'm talking to them from time to time, and I'm almost a white guy

Oh, got it. I was confused because I don't know what you look like

I remember the time I had a Japanese exchange student.

Apparently it's polite in Japan to smack/chew your food loudly to show you're enjoying it. By the end of the fortnight, I couldn't be in the same room as the guy during mealtimes for fear of punching him in the face.

Were they cute? I love japanese girls

Unless you're exchanging something through osmosis.
