Going to the dentist (rant about OHIP)

Why is it so bloody expensive?

Better question is, why isn't it covered by OHIP?

More I think about this, more I'm wondering why BASIC medical needs, like eyeglasses, dental care aren't covered. So much for socialist medical care.

Thank goodness work covers my dental expenses like 90% (I think). Still need to get a root canal done and I shudder to think how much that will cost.

Moral of the story: OHIP sucks. Oh, and floss and brush your teeth daily

How are dental and glasses essential for life???

Thats their argument...

And the government subsidizes some of the cost if you need them to don't they???

Anyway...Whatever....I have insurance...

If I don't have glasses, I can't bloody see.

If I don't have good teeth, I can't chew food and/or be in pain from toothache.

lucky you. a lot of people (esp. people working at low end jobs) don't

Even when you brush and floss regularly, not a guarantee that you don't need to go to the dentist. Shit happens.

You should get the monthlies - $110 for 6 months

Wheee I just got back from the dentist and my benefits pay for it.

I love this feeling.

In other words, you don't have to get expensive glasses...

They sell them at Walmart for $20 a pair...

So you have to go to the dentist every once in a while...

Won't cost that much if you take good care of your teeth...

And anyone who wants a good job can get one... never mind the recession bullshit...

yeah thank god for benefits! I get pretty nice coverage

unfortunately I'm without OHIP for now, since my new work permit puts me in an administative loophole within OHIP's system trying to resolve that now!

Thankfully i have pretty good benefits at work and everything is covered. It's not full coverage.. but close to it.. between 80-90% depending on what it is.

Tell that to someone like me who has a prescription of -4.25 (medium strength), who cannot even read the letters on a computer screen cca. 50 cm distant and who needs to work on the computer every day all day at work. No, things like glasses are not essential for your life, but they are essential for your normal everyday ability to function and for your well-being.

No, they don't. At least I never got any coverage or reimbursement for either eye-doctor examinations or my eye-glass prescriptions. I had to pay for them out of my own pocket.

Which is why you don't have to care... so simple...

20bucks? lol

I'm a special case because whenever i get a pair of glasses, it has to be made by specialist because I am too blind. (last pair cost me 350, most of it on the lenses)

isn't OHIP made for poor people who might need that exceptional health costs covered?
quote:

just a check up, few x rays and some cleaning today cost me 350. even if you go to dentist once a year, that's still a hunk of paycheck for most people.

I guess you don't remember when people with masters and ph.d had trouble finding a good job in their field (no, i'm not talking about arts majors)

if the purpose of OHIP is to provide for basic health needs and improve quality of life of avg citizen, any other medical insurance shouldn't be necessary.

i'm going to blow my top next time I hear some chick got a boob job at govt expense. (i know that stuff isn't covered by OHIP anymore)
