2008.10.11. PivotTechno & The WestsideWax DJ School @ Bloor-Dundas ComeUnity Festival - FREE!
If you've come out of Dundas West Subway Station over the past week, you might have noticed a tasty graff mural being put up in the alleyway adjacent to the TTC lot...

Saturday, October 11, 2008 marks the debut of the Bloor-Dundas ComeUnity Festival, running down the length of the back alley from Dundas Street West over to Indian Road and all the way to Keele Subway Station.
PivotTechno and The Family Umbrella are happy to be a part of this event, and we'll be in the alley burning up the ones and twos from noon until sundown. We're also pleased to announce that the ComeUnity Festival will serve as the launch for the new WestsideWax DJ School, a project that has been in the works for some time, but has only become viable recently.
DJing, while wonderfully entertaining for both the d.j. and audience, also holds great theraputic value, and this is the aspect that will be emphasised in this up-and-coming school, which will focus primarily on giving subsidised and even free lessons to kids (ages 12 and up) and teens from low-income or otherwise struggling families. In the past 25 years, WestsideWax has learned that d.j.ing and dancing to electronic music is great for getting us in touch with our natural sense of rhythm and an incredibly grounding energy, it improves focus and concentration, and it's kickass FUN!
The school will be comfortably based out of the WestisideWax studio on Bloor Street West, and studies will include turntable and mixer setup and maintenance, beatmatching, programming (or "storytelling" as we like to call it), EQing, cuts and other fader tricks, basic turntablism, improvisation and history lessons in electronic music. Styles of music taught will range from Techno (Detroit, European and Asian) to House (Classic Chicago, Acid, Booty and Tech-House) and Electro, and special seminars on intermediate/advanced turntablism and digital d.j.ing will be presented from time to time. Once students become proficient enough, they'll have the opportunity to record their sets, and we eventually plan on showcasing WestsideWax d.j.s at community events around the city. Oh, and we're also offering big kid lessons for adults who want to get in touch with their souls, too!
We should be pretty easy to find, as we'll be within earshot of the subway station and we'll have a banner hanging from the back deck. All are welcome to join in - come dance, or just chill with a warm cup of chili hot chocolate! The forecast is looking o.k., but rain-or-shine we'll be belting out all-day sonic mayhem from various Tech-talented locals such as Rouchos (Subcode) and gl.tch (ecelectic groove), as well as giving interested kids a chance to scope out and try out the gear!
If you have any inquiries about the DJ school, or would like to donate to our cause, please contact us via PM or email
See you on the 11th!

I'll have Serato on-hand, so if you've ever wondered what the fuss is about, here's your chance to see!
Aye, two days from now, the one called gl.tch will most definitely bring the sweet beatdown - this man knows his chops and is steadily on the rise in the Toronto scene!
Looks like we're in for a beautiful, sunny day, and I've just been informed that another member of the Pivot camp might be able to take time from his busy schedule to swing by with some classic Chicago House, Disco and Rare Groove - stay tuned, and we'll see you this Saturday!
